Looks like I can get to the speedometer cable without taking apart the dash. I see exactly where it exits the firewall and where it connects to the trans. So I have a replacement cable on the way and have decided to change it myself. Having never done this, any tips from those who have tackled this job before? Any "make sure you do this" advice?

get comfortable upside down go slow and small hands help
and make sure you can eyeball when you disconnect from speedometer
end...theres a push in type clamp springy-thingy its hard to explain
but when you see it you will understand it ..

....run your cable through the firewall first
....dont forget to lube the cable

    dash doesn't come off

What do you lube the cable with?

    Graphite.

From what I understand, the cable will just pull out either end. So if you unscrew the cable from the transmission, the inner cable will come out if you pull it. I could always pull mine out from the dashboard with a pair of needle nose pliers.

The one I bought is the housing and cable together, so it's all getting changed. Is this springy thing something that will come flying out if you aren't careful?

the springy thing is built on the rear side of speedometer...its
like a clip ..all you do is push in with finger while same hand
is wrapped around cable and then slide out cable ...its easier
then the way I'm explaining it ...trust me ..you will see

I am wondering if I need to do this too. 72 Skylark 350 Auto on the column.

My speedo is making a ticking noise between 20 and 43 or so mph. I once saw it slightly bouncing along with the tick noise. Can I more easily just lube it with graphite, or will I need to replace it?

Where do you guys get them, just the auto parts store? Would there be only one to get for my year/trans/engine, so they don't give me the wrong one I wonder?

Tyler Northcutt Just an old pile of parts

You can try the local parts store. The speedo cable should be the same for a turbo 400 and turbo 350.
