This has probably been asked before, but I couldn't find it......HOw much earlier than the car's build date would the casting dates on major engine components be? Also is it common for cylinder heads on the same engine to be cast about two weeks apart?(this seems to be true for the several engines that I have torn down) Thanks Fred
I've seen date codes precede build dates anywhere from 1 or 2 days to 3 months. Some parts were done in batches. So, especially for the rarer parts, you may find lots of parts out there with one date code, then nothing until 2 weeks (or 2 months) later. The assemblers didn't give a rip about date codes, so it's entirely possible for cars to receive, say, two heads with different date codes.
