Well my fantastic deal on a new and “in the box” 9635 Carter Competition carb turned out to be a moderately used 9605 in a 9635 box. Somehow I wasn’t surprised, so needless to say I passed on the deal.
One of my neighbors heard I was looking for a carb and he turned up on my doorstep with a torn-up dusty old box containing an old Carter. He said if I didn’t give him a beer for it he was going to toss it. As luck would have it… it’s an old, and very tired, LO-9625-SA Comp series 625 cfm Carter!!
I’d like to bring this carb “Back” to some point of reference before I start tuning it in to my engine. Does anyone have any suggestions for needles and jets sizes for a freshened up (new bearing, rings and valve job) stock 340 w/ an Isky 270 cam, headers and dual flowmasters?
This carb does have some issues... He said it was running real lean if it would run at all, I found one of the inlet needle valves was stuck closed. He also disconnected the choke (removed the linkage to the electric choke… and lost it) because it was stuck closed. I found that the mechanism behind the electric choke was stuck-frozen from dirt. And also all the screws are very distorted from improper screwdrivers and torque. If anyone has an old Carter core or the choke linkage and screws I’d be interested in it.
    Thanks,

Try Carmen Faso from NY. He is an expert on Carters. You can always call him and ask his opinion.
