Howdy, Does one of the jets inside the afb have a ball bearing? I opened my carb today and found 2 jets on the left side one goes into the bottom of the float tank and the other is at a angle towards the accelerator pump. this one has what looks like a ball in it and I cant screw it out. but I did find 2 skinny plugged tubes and I was able to clear them out.

I'm hoping to make this car idle so i can make adjustments and evaluate its health.

Hi, The part you are refering to with the ball bearing is not a jet. It is the accelorator pump intake check valve. I belive it lets the fuel into the float bowl. You should have 4 jets in the bottom of the bowls, 2 primary and 2 secondaries on a 4 bbl AFB carb. They still sell strip kits and rebuild kits for the AFB. Great, simple carbs!! Best of luck. Howdy Mark, Thanks for your reply. I sprayed carb cleaner in and you right it only goes from the big chamber to the accelorator pump chamber but i have only found 2 jets.

My main goal was to get this carb to idle so I can set timing, points and hear if the engine has any knocks. I only have the car a few weeks and have not been able to make it idle. I did find 2 skinny tubes plugged up and cleared them out hoping this is the idle part. I will put the carb back together saturday and give it another try.

If you have a lead on a carb rebuilding site/addy please post it.

Hi, Are you familier with the idle speed and mixture screws? Also, if the vacuum advance is hooked up to the wrong port, it may not want to idle. I have a book on Carter carbs if you have any questions, just a thought. Are you working with a 2 barrel carb? Do you know what year it is? Mark

Hi Mark, It is a 4bbl. Yes I do know of these screws. The carb has only two vacuum hook ups one on the pass front for the Vacuum advance and one in the middle of the rear of the body for the pcv valve. It has a heat choke that needs fixing the tube coming from the manifold has been cut off half way to the carb.
