    Hello,

The car in my sig has a worked over Holley 650 w/ mechanical secondaries right now. The carb was built by Brasswell Carburators in Tucson a few years back, and supposedly flowed at 810 cfm, but I believe it still has a 650 base plate. I have a Carter electric fuel pump and Holley regulator set at 6psi feeding my fuel.

The car runs good, but I'm thinking that there is a better carb for my setup. I have a Quadrajet off of a '71 455 out of an Electra sitting on my shelf. Would it be worth while to build that one up, is my current carb good, or should I fo to a Holley 850?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
    Mike

Unless they put a 750 baseplate on I don't know how it flow 810.

I don't doubt that this works well, BUT I think the QJ or Holley 850 would be alot more appropriate for the needs of your engine, in my opinion.

  3. The QJ's make great power if they are worked over properly. I like them better than the Ebrock and the holley for street/strip applications. That is my opinion

It sounds like I'd be quite a bit better off with a different carb. So, considering I already have a QJet available I'm guessing it would be more worth my while to build up the QJet?

Any recommendations on what rods and jets I sould go with?
I have no idea what the QJet has right now, but it's stock and out of a '71 Electra 455. I'm guessing that this is a good carb to start with, right?

Also, I know there are several tweeks for building performance QJets. Anyone have a good resource to point me at?

Do you want to do the QJ yourself, OR would you rather it be set up professionally? There are several people or companies that can do this fairly cheaply. Being that its out of a BBB, it probably reasonably close as far as metering rods and jets go..

I think that this Board right here is about the best resource your going to find.. but there are books available.

I'm planning on rebuilding the QJ myself. I've rebuilt them several times before without any problems. I'm just curious what would be a good rod / jet combo and also a good resource for some tweeks that I can do while it's apart.

Yeah, that's the one I was trying to think of, but I can't seem to find anymore. I want to buy another copy, so thanks for the link John!

    Very good book!

    Thanks for the info. :)

I'm going to get it slapped on the car sometime next month.

Just a couple more questions for you guys.

Do you guys have problems getting your cars through smog with QJ's?

The Holley needs 67 and 73 jets to get it to pass.

With my combo, where should I start as far as rods and jets?

    Thanks again,
    Mike

Stock specs would be fine for getting the car through smog testing....

As long as the rest of the engine is in top shape.
