I recently rebuilt my 455 stage 1 motor which is a 71. has gs club pop mechanics cam stock intake and headers stock q-jet with 77 jets and 45 rods. car wont idle less than 800 rpm with throttle blades cracked open. car is auto and when i put it in park the idle goes to the moon. I have the doug roe book and have read every carb article i can find. I drilled out idle by pass holes to over 1/8 and no effect. also made first 1/16/ hole in primary throttle plates and still crappy. any ideas would be greatly appreciated because my wife says if i spend any more time working on the carb and smelling like gas she is going to lock me out of the house. oh well at least it's still summer.

Did you make absolutely sure that you cleaned all the posts and orifices in the carburetor AND blew them out with compressed air? Sounds like you might have some gunk in your idle circuits...

Is it the carb that cam on the car from the factory?

I cleaned the carb and passges drilled with carb cleaner and small computer type can of compressed air. Carb is an 800 cfm from a 1972 Buick 455 which i think is about the same as a 71455

    gs4u2c Is that a 442?

You may want to check for a vacuum leak. Maybe the modulator line or the throttle shafts.

You might want to remind her that the car is not doing the griping here. Just kidding. My suspicion is the cam. Though I am not sure of the specs, it is possible for the cam to cause the carb to lose its signal, or to change the quality of the signal, causing the carb to quit feeding fuel. Check the idle manifold vacuum, in both park and drive. Let us know what you find.

I plan to try a different carb tomorrow. to see if i can eliminate any vacuum leaks. also will disconnect vac modulator, pcv etc. vacuum at about 800 rpm is about 10-12(with throttle blades cracked wide, at 12-1400 rpm it is about 16-18. Could a stock torque converter cause these problems?. I know it can cause creep at idle. I plan to put in a jw winters 2200 stall I have. Cam specs are 232/246 @.050, lift is.518 intake and .536 exhaust and 116.0 lobe sep. machine shop said they degreed it straight up so it is 6 degrees advanced. If they made a mistake and put it in retarded would it cause these problems???

Tried a different carb tonight with no success. But did find oil on #6 and #8 spark plugs.. Could there be a vacuum leak from the bottom of the intake because it does not appear to leak on the top?? Or could it be the rings are not yet seated only 400 miles on motor. They are Total Seal Rings. Will call machine shop tomorrow. Thanks in advance for any more suggestions.
