Im questioning whether a factory 71-72 455 800 cfm quadrajet will have the same choke riser set up as a 70 model carb? Just wondering since i am contemplating putting one on my 70 455. Any idea?
If you are referring to the choke in the intake manifold that connects to the divorce choke linkage then yes, it does.
70 and 71 Divorced chokes aren't EXACTLY the same, though. I'm not sure about the actual linkage, but the plates to not interchange. One would think they would work either way, though. It's just that you can't bolt a 71 choke thermostat on a 70 intake.
Ok since im getting conflicting replies here..i guess what i need to know is if i can bolt on a 71-72 carb on my 70 and still have the choke connect up and be functional!
I think what Adam means is: you can't physically take out the '71 choke thermostat and use it on a '70 manifold. If I recall, the spring has a bunch of travel, fore and aft as well as up and down. I have a '74 manifold with the original choke thermostat still in it, but I doubt if it would help you. If somehow it does, I'll unbolt the thermostat and give it to you, it's just collecting dust. If you'd like another set of eyes and another opinion on what you have and what might work or be a problem, I can stop by sometime, you're only down the road. I'm not the most experienced Buick mechanic, but I know a thing or two, and hopefully I'm still able to learn a thing or two. Open invitation, but of course my payment will be a ride in the GSX this spring.:TU:
choked up The carb will work fine. You can't switch the choke asembly in the manifold, which you don't have to to put the carb on...The little arm will fit in the later carb linkage. I thinik thats the answer you are looking for. - Bill
Correct, a 1971 choke will not work on a 1970 intake...however... Since you are keeping the 1970 intake & choke, you can use the 1971 carb. If you want to be 100% sure, flip the choke open and closed a few times on the 1970 carb to see how much choke travel it takes to open and close it. Then flip the 1971 carb open and closed a few times. They should have the same amount of travel. This means they both activate with the same amount of bimetal strip travel, so you can use the old choke bimetal strip in the 1970 intake with the 1971 carb.
Thanks for the info guys....i guess what you all are saying is that i can use the 71 carb and hook it up to the 70 intake manifold choke thermostat! Thanks all!
