Ok, was out a few days ago looking for wheels and tires for my ride '72 sky conv. And she died on me.
Waited a few and restarted fine. One minute later dies again. This goes on and on. I'm thinking fuel pump or filter so I change both. Fires right up after changeout and was running great even to the point where I kicked off the high idle......for about 3 minutes. Then she dies again. This whole thing started about 20 miles after putting gas in..... now I am thinking water in gas?????
    Any thoughts or recommendations appreciated.

Im thinking its starving for fuel.Look for leaks in the rubber lines at the tank sucking air or the sock in the fuel tank clogged or collapsed.

What type of ignition are you running?

A gas tank with debris in it can cause this. As the engine runs, it draws the debris to the sock, plugging it. After it dies and sits a few minutes, the debris falls away from the sock, allowing the engine to run again for a short period before the cycle starts all over again. Wouldn't hurt to put an inline spark tester on it either, the coil or voltage to it may be dropping out.

First thing we need to do is find out if we are loosing spark or fuel. If it was water in the fuel probably would not come and go because the carb would be full of water when it died and would not start back up after a few minutes and run fine. When it dies you need to remove the air cleaner and see if the accelarater pump is pumping fuel into the carb by working the throttle but not cranking the engine over. If you have fuel then you need to check for spark. Remove a spark plug wire from a spark plug and you can use a screw drive to insert into the spark plug boot and put it close to metal and then have someone crank the engine over and see if you have spark. see if it jumps from the screw drive to the engine.

Does it sputter and then die, or does it suddenly just quit?

Initially it sputtered and then died. Following the fuel pump change it was running great for a couple minutes and then died with no sputter.
