I'm having trouble figuring out what type of posi carrier I have in my 1966 Pontiac rear, currently under my 1970 Skylark. Is this a non re-buildable Auburn? After spending the money to get the rear end setup using a used set of 3:08s and this used posi unit, I find that I still have a 1 tire fire at the track Was trying to do this on a budget but no luck so far.
That’s a factory cone style posi unit. Jim can re-machine the internals to tighten it back up,as long as it isn’t broken or badly tore up.
Thanks for the help Brian! I'm loathe to spend another penny on this damn 8.2", it cost me almost $600 to get it set up and under the car, that's about halfway to a custom 9" housing which I already have a used third member for. I was really hoping it would at least give me a couple years of service before crapping out, but to find out that it doesn't even work is rough. I'm considering either welding it or installing a mini spool for the time being, but does that mean I'd have to redo the gear setup or can I just bolt the spool in place of that carrier and go? I guess I can ask Jim what it costs to rebuild it, but I don't want to have to redo the backlash/pinion depth. If I have to do that I'm just going to save up for the 9"!
lol. I do not understand how anyone could possible think a 1966 50 year old posi would work like it did in 66??? The trouble is a Posi wears on every turn you take in the car....sooo really a grandma driven car with a posi is likely to be more worn out than a guy doing light to light action street driving. So that posi us the regular duty posi 2 side gear 2 pinion gear unit with 6 preload springs Later the higher powered cars had the 2 side gear 4 pinion gear units a with 3 spring stacked inside of each other. Either or can do the job for street fun... Will just have to see how bad the cones are bottomed out to how much machine work it will need. As Brian said your just pull the unit and reinstall again ...little bit of time but you will be good again soon. Jim
