    Hello,

I am getting ready to fire up my motor for the first time. I went out today to get oil for it, but I want to make sure I get the right type. I am planning on using a 5W30 oil for the break-in, however do I need to use a detergent free oil. If I do then there may be a problem due to the fact that I was unable to locate any non-detergent at any of the stores I went to. Any advise.

    Thanks
    Ron

Ron - I used to also think that non-detergent oil was necessary to use for break-in. If you do a search on break-in oil, you should find a fair amount of good info.

Jim Weise and others have addressed this very subject quite thoroughly! Bottom line is, use whatever oil you are going to run in the engine (i.e. 10w-30). The one additive that is imperative to use is a bottle of the GM EOS!!:Smarty:

Break your cam in for the 20-30 minutes, change your filter immediately (moly cam lube will clog the filter VERY fast), and top off the oil. Keep the break-in oil in there for the first 2-3k miles. The EOS provides that extra 'cushion' that is needed. I would change the filter a couple of times during that period - better safe than sorry.
