I need 12v to the coil for my MSD Dist. I see a IGN/ACC terminal in the fuse box, can I use that and run a wire straight to the coil??

You could if you didn't mind having your ignition on when the key is in the "ACC" accessory position. This also means that the car would stay running if you accidently turned the ignition key backwards quick enough.

That is the half:moonu: way of doing it:laugh: Do it right. Follow the wire from the + side of the points coil back to the fire wall. Unwrap the harness if you have to. There will be a wire coming up from the starter solenoid "R" terminal. Remove that also. The resistance wire go into the firewall connector below the brake booster. There is a bolt in the middle of the connector. Loosen the bolt, and the entire front half of the connector will pull off along with the rest of the engine harness. Each wire will clip into the front half of the connector with a barb type clip. You can compress the barb with a pair of needle nose pliers, and the wire and barb will pull out from the front of the connector. Unsolder the barb and solder it onto a plain 14 ga. wire. Then clip it back into the front half of the connector. Then install it back onto the firewall with the bolt, re wrap the harness, and you have done it the right way. Congratulate your self and have a beer.:TU:

Here is a picture of what the barb type clip looks like. I believe they are available at NAPA, but I don't have a part number.

Because we have been there, and done that. You get to benefit from our experience, and the satisfaction of doing it right. Have the beer after you do the work:beers2: It isn't as hard as it sounds.

    Thanks :TU:

Summit used to sell a wiring kit with the barb attached already. Does anyone sell that now?

I'm working on an HEI conversion for my 455 right now. Here is the part number I got from NAPA for the barb terminal: 1589QT. It's made by a company named Pico. They didn't have the other terminal connector (the one that goes into the distributor) in stock, so I ordered one and will post that number later.

Stopped in at NAPA today. That barbed terminal NAPA part number is actually 725145. They actually had it behind the counter in a tray with all kinds of different terminals in it...

    Hope that helps...

I use the IGN terminal if it is not hot in the ACC key position. That is what Dave Ray (IgnitionMan) has told me to do since I got his first HEI conversion. I have done same with the 6 large cap HEI's I also use. This way, the stock wiring loom isn't altered.

One thing he did say to me a long time ago was, some, not many GM vehicles, have the resistor wire under the dash, and NOT from the engine side of the firewall bulkhead connector to the distributor, so, he says to always check the wire from the connector to the ignition switch with an ohm meter, and don't assume that the wire on the engine side of the firewall is the resistor wire. I haven't come across one of these under dash resisted wires, but Dave says that some very few do exist.

    Regards,

    Milton

Interesting. Is that an actual NAPA part? The one my NAPA gave me was made in Oregon (according to the box). The store owner mentioned something about liking their stuff while he was ordering me the clip that goes into the HEI distributor. He must just like to shop around. :Do No:

Yep, that is their actual part number. Go to http://www.napaonline.com/ and along the left hand side of the page in the search box type in 725145, next screen will pop open and ask if its for a specific vehicle, I clicked no and the next screen that comes up will show you the part. Just click on it and it'll show more specific info on it...

The barbed fitting is a Packard 56 spade.

I would be happy to mail you a few if you need them.

It was kind of funny. I went in there with your Pico part number and the guy behind the counter said that wasn't a NAPA part number. He actually went online, googled the Pico number you listed, walked over to his electrical terminal parts tray, opened it, looked in there and there it was, with a NAPA part number. It may very well be the same Pico terminal, but he just didn't know it by that name...
