I have a survivor 1971 GS 350 that has 29500 miles on it, and am deciding what i want to do with it. it has an emblem on the trunk that says "Limited Sport coupe" and am wondering first off what exactly that entails and and secondly is it rare (haven't seen any wityh that emblem), and if so should that change the direction I take with the car

I do not have that emblem on my 71 GS350 and my exterior paint and interior is 100% original.

I like to see some photos of the emblems.

What's the vin? If I recall, 71 GS hardtops started with 43437... Another possibility is that the trunklid had to be changed.

The emblem is not original to the car. The trunk should have a GS emblem on it and under it should be a rectangular emblem that says "By Buick" in a black background

I believe the emblem is original as is the trunk lid, This emblem is on the left and the GS emblem is on the right. BTW: I cant upload pictures for some reason

I'm not 100% on the emblem yet but I did read that "Sport Coupe" ment it was not a post car, which is true of mine.

Is the emblem metal or plastic? Is it stick on?

I'll check when I get home but it is well worn so its been on the car a long time if not the whole life of the car......

I would like to find a copy of the original ordering catalog to see what was available then

In 1971, GS was a separate Series, as were Skylark and Skylark Custom...identified by VIN position 2-3. Skylark was "33," Skylark Custom "44," and GS "34." Post cars were Skylarks. VIN position 4-5 was Model. GS only came in 2 models, coupe (Model 37) and convertible (Model 67). "3437" or "3467" in VIN positions 2-5 identifies a 1971 Buick as a GS.

When Jason said, "not original to car," he meant "from the factory." It was not uncommon for dealers to put emblems on, especially deck lids...usually plastic stick-ons, hence the question.

There was a dedicated "GS Wholesale Car Order" form listing available options. See example here: http://www.stage1registry.com/BuickGS/1971_order_form.jpg

It's possible the emblem was on the car when it left the dealership...but it's not a '71 GS emblem. If you're into this sort of thing, might be interesting to research emblem origin...

After some internet detective work and research, that emblem seems to be a quarter panel emblem off a 1977 Electra Limited. And the best I can tell, the sport coupe emblem is off a 1978 Regal. its actually a combination of two separate emblems

Your Cortez gold 71 GS is absolutely gorgeous. Really is a beautiful example of a GS-350 which are becoming very rare as most were converted to big block status. makes me wish I hadn't sold my 72 Stratomist blue N-25 GS-350. Sold it on Ebay and it went to Kuwait. Never see that car again but I digress....Those emblems on the trunk are like painting a moustache on the Mona Lisa

Thank you very much for the information and the time you spent looking into this! I agree that if the emblems came from the sources you mentioned its not right. But that said they are part of this car's heritage and to remove them would most likely create an uglier mark than the labels themselves so for the time being they will remain in place. I love this car for its originality and how well it runs and drives. Trying to find out how it came to be the way it is, is part of the fun. I plan to keep it original including the imperfections it came to me with. The car runs and drives fantastic and most of it is in great shape. For now I am just cleaning it up and fixing what needs to be fixed to make it safe and function properly. My current projects are fixing the seat adjuster and finding someone good to rebuild the brake booster. Do you guys have any recomendations for the booster?

It is your car and you should do what you like with it. In 1978, I bought a 71 GS 350 (dark green, tan bucket seat interior, and N25 bumper) for $2K. Car had like 55,000 miles I think. I foolishly let it go. I still miss it. My current Buick is pretty nice, but your first Buick is like your first love - never forgotten.

I just replaced my booster with a real nice one from Steve Caruso (Underdog350 on the board). I'm sure it would have cost way more to rebuild mine plus put the cadmium gold finish on it. Check with Steve for a price for a new one from him.
