I spoke with the current ower, he told me that the car was a special order by someone in South Africa (the country) but that person went missing, so it was sold to someone in Australia. Tried to take a photo of the steering shaft going into the floor (Australian made conversions had a chain that went from one side of the car to the original steering shaft on the left), But since the owner wasn't with the car, I couldn't open the door to take a better photo. I spoke to him later on at the band area and he told me that the master cylinder and brake booster are also located on the firewall, on the right hand side of the car. Here's the photo I tried to take:
The red deuce with the Hemi brings back memories. A friend of mine had a very similar car that he bought from his older brother. It too had a hemi with 6 97s. My friend converted it from the 331 Chrysler to a 392 Oldsmobile. The car can briefly be seen parked at a strip mall in Dedham MA. in the Steve McQueen film "The Thomas Crown Affair". The deuce was purposely uglyed (spl?) up for the scene.
That Pontiac should be a 65, unless it was called a 66 for the Australian market. The dash does not look original. Here's what it should look like for the Canadian market. Knew a guy who owned on years ago.
It says "date of first registration: 30-06-1966" (DD-MM-YY format) on the official paperwork. Maybe the car was registered the next year because the person that ordered the car went missing and before they found another customer and ship it to Australia, it was already 1966? Next time I come across the car I will check the VIN
From what I've read about export cars, anything's possible regarding year of title. There were many mid sixties Canadian built GM cars running around up here making the annual model changes easy to remember.
