I will be pulling my 455 in 72 GS 455 this winter and before I do I would like to have a Buick engine builder listen to this 455. It has a rattling marbles sound when warned up. Oil pressure is great, runs great, and the noise has to go. It's been there for years and think it is because of excessive bearing clearances but the oil pressure is still excellent. I have a .010/.010 crank I plan on installing because I hear a low end noise once in a wile on cold start up, AL.

Ah. I was just throwing it out there. If you can produce a high quality recording and post it on the board that would be really helpful to the experts on here.

Thanks for your follow up! I'll look into that. Trying to find a Buick builder in Nortern MD. is tuff! I'm a mechanic my self and never heard this sound in a 455, AL.

sounds like a cracked flexplate to me,usually a jar of marbles type of sound from that, look at that real close before tearing down your engine, also remove belt and see if the thrust bearing is bad, this may also take out the flexplate.

I'm no expert but i heard someone complained of a similar sound and it was a broken stock windage tray rattling in the oilpan.

Al, I think it is the windage tray, I've had 2 go in the racecar, discovered when the oil dipstick hits the windage tray, when you try to put it back in. Check it out! :spank:

Hi Al - Check with Bruce (BQUICK) or Mike (carcrazy455). I think they both use BURTONSVILLE PERFORMANCE MACHINE SHOP,Laurel MD.(301)490-3131 Ask for Mr.Chuck Roberts.(Mr.Roberts).

Go to the Cecil County meet in october (the 16th & 17th this year). LOTS of Buick gurus there (hopefully including me, although I fall far short of the "guru" status). It is in North East Maryland.

Might be an oil slinger that's loose...

I Believe There Is A Way To Determine Rod Or Main Bearing Failure, If It Makes The Noise With No Load It's A Rod, If It Does It Under Load It's A Main. You Can Also Get A Mechanics Stethiscope And Try To Pin Point The Noise. Good Luck
