Buick 350 problem before startup

Discussion in 'Small Block Tech' started by 66skylarkconvertible, Jun 21, 2021.

  1. Maybe you guys could help me out here I just got ready to start up my Buick 350 that I had rebuilt three years ago and as I was pouring in the water and antifreeze it starting to come out both sides of the engine head gasket gasket any idea as to why this is happening. What could have the machine shop done wrong during assembly thank you

Could it be coming out of the core/freeze plug holes?

  3. No it’s coming out both sides of engine at the head gasket same spot in the middle

  4. It’s pouring out as fast as I can pour it in

Why did you wait 3 years to see if a shop did a build correctly?

If it's pouring out between the head and block either your head gasket is leaking, there are massive mistakes in the surfaces of them, there are cracks somewhere or you might not even have a head gasket for whatever reason. They could have torqued the head bolts incorrectly and after 3 years that can warp your head. It's hard to say without taking it all apart again. Call them up.

Even if you had no gasket it's hard to believe it can come out as fast as you pour it in. You're absolutely sure it's not freeze plugs? That's the only thing I can think of that would leak that fast, short of visible holes.

You don't mean the middle of the intake manifold(ie directly below the carb on the centerline of the engine)?

The middle of the Head? That seems odd.

  7. No it’s a head gasket between the cylinders four and six

  8. the shop that did the work is closed and the guy retired. Fml

Head gasket upside down can cause that if I remember correctly

Yes, the old upside down head gasket problem. Always read the "this side up" on the new gaskets. They look the same both ways but they are not.

    And check the oil

  17. Thank you for your input. I checked the torque on the head bolts. They were ok. I will remove both heads this weekend. I will give. A update on what I find. Thank you

I just installed a pair of Felpro gaskets on my 350 & one gasket had "UP" stamped on it but the other did not but it did have a manufacturer's make. I placed that side up after comparing the "UP" gasket to the unmarked. so that all the openings lined up. Let's hop that this works.
I had the heads rebuilt with all new valve train hardware.
I have not started the car yet as I still have to reinstall the fender liners.

  19. I remove the heads low and behold they are upside down gaskets just like a couple you guys said thank you so much problem solved. The machine shop had the gaskets upside down on both sides I didn’t expect that.

So can those gaskets be reused or are they trash now that they were torqued upside down?
