I put a remanufactured master cylinder on my 76 Century this weekend. I bench bled as per the instructions and installed it on the vehicle. I blew all the old fluid out of the lines using low pressure. I connected the brake lines, made sure the m/c was full and tried to gravity bleed the system starting at the rr. I closed the system and would carefully put the brakes without popping the proportioning valve. Well it wasn't going to good so instead of getting help I popped the valve and now I have front brakes only and even with help bleeding the fronts I can't get it to equalize. I've always been able to get these to pop back but this one is being a pain. Anyone have any ideas?
Have you pushed the button on the front of teh proportioning valve yet? Buick/GM call it a combination valve. The button on the front is there to equalize the valve and therefore reset the light. You could always disconnect the wire at the switch on the valve and therefore no light:laugh:
I did push the button but nothing happened. I want to get the light to go out because right now I have no rear brakes. Then again I could do some really good burn outs.
once you get all the air out of the brake lines the light will go off. what kind of bleeding procedure are you doing?
I may have not got all the air out of the m/c from the git-go. I'm going to bleed it again and see what happens. Al and I talked this over Sunday and think I didn't bench bleed the m/c correctly.
I had the same problem the other week. Loose (just a few turns) the brake line that runs to the rear of the car at the proportioning valve, and let a helper pump the brake pedal. Trapped air will escape and you will get steady spurts of brake fluid at the rear drums if another helper opens the bleeder screw.
if the prop valve has moved over, it takes a fair amount of force to reset it...sometimes just pressing the brake will not do it, so give the brake pedal a hard jab and if all the air is out it will reset itself.
The light is out! I bled the m/c on the vehicle with the help of a friend. I didn't notice any air when I did this. While the lines were off I push the button on the proportioning valve a couple of times. I reconnected the lines to the m/c and topped it off. I pumped the brake pedal a couple of times and the light was still on. I then started the car and pumped the pedal and the light went out. I bled the brakes and went for a ride and all is well with the brakes. Now maybe I'll look into my hesitation and surging. I want to thank everyone for their help and advice.
Good stuff, thats how you do it...just one problem at a time and keep on plugging. That way it never overwhelms you.... Have fun! :beer Tim
The first one disrespected a presidential canadate. I can see supporting a canadate one way or another but don't think it's in good taste to disrespect the one you don't support, AL.
