How the heck do you get the four bolts behind the power booster off? I can bairly get a wrench in behind it but the nuts must be bolted down to 200 ft pounds or something. I can't get them to budge. I can't get regular or deep sockets to fit either. No way to cut it out. Unless I do it from inside the cab.

I have a new brake booster for my brake conversion so no worries on damage. Thanks

What car are you working on. Soak the studs/nuts with PB Blaster for a couple days. They should come loose quite easily.
My '71 was an easy job, just a little patience.

Having removed my fair share, I recommend using a flex-head ratcheting box wrench. I can't remember the size but I think it is either 9/16 or 5/8.

Like Steve said, soak the bolts with PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench.

    Cheers

i get impatient and frustrated easy. I used both tips and it worked. But, the big secret was taking the hood off to get behind the booster easier and using my snake shape box end wrench and a pipe (breaker bar) - no hood worked like a charm. I thought I had to break out a plasma cutter or something.

12-point ratchet end wrench, for sure! I think I used about three different shapes and lengths on mine, with the hood on. But, if they're on there super tight, not sure how you're gonna get them off without taking the hood off and adding a breaker bar. Penetrating oil or heat them with a butane torch (carefully!).

Having just done this this weekend, the lower passenger side nut rounded off with a 12 point wrench. I recommend removing the wire harness and wiper motor and using a 6 point wrench.

its a good thing I am doing a complete front end upgrade. I have found having my fenders, hood and wheels off it makes work on the car a whole lot easier! I had a hard time with booster removal until I removed the hood. Also wiper motor would probably help

I just took mine off and I feel your pain. I found the answer, use a 1/2" drive socket and a swivel and a 12" extension and a impact. It walked right off. I too had tried everything else. This was just simple with the right tools

hello all, im new here, ive got a 68 riv.. didnt have trouble removing the bolt nuts, however i cant seem to slide the booster eye off the brake pedals pin that it hooks on to.... anyone have any ideas?? i can only slide it maybe a 1/4 of an inch.. still got at least another 1/4 inch to go.. no cotter pins or anything just cant get it any farther. do i need to completely dis assemble the booster from inside the engine compartment??

Here is what worked for me:

The only way to get the booster rod eye off of the pin on my Riv is to have someone under the hood pull the booster gently forward until all bolts clear all holes. The brake pedal goes to the floor. If you have any extra carpet protectors under the brake pedal, remove them so that the pedal can go all the way to the floor. At that point, get under there and slide the eye of the booster off of the pin. The guy under the hood may need to slide the booster left or right to help you guide the eye off the pin. He can then remove booster from the car.

When you know this procedure it is so easy to do. When you don't know it, you end up trying to force things that should not be forced...

I dunno why but I had all the bolts off my booster and the pin removed but the thing wouldnt budge. I gave up and cleaned and painted it in place.

You guys should invest in a set of Snap On "flank drive" wrenches. They are hands down the best wrench made. The flank drive works like you have vise grips on the fastener. The open end doesnt flex like other wrenches either.

For mine, I used the redneck impact wrench... which would mostly just be me beating on the end of a normal box end wrench with a hammer. :Dou:

I had the same problem.. had to take a 12 inch flathead and a hammer and get between booster and braket...beat it a few times and pryed it off, then was able to get it outta there..
