Hello, I was hoping you could save me. I have a 1969 Skylark with a 1976 Buick 455. The mechanic is trying to replace the one piece rear main seal. Is there an easy way to access it and replace it ? Does he have to do major work ? Please help. Thank you

No easy way unfortunately. Yes major work is required. The best way is to remove the engine from the car and put it on a stand. Flip engine, remove pan, remove all rods caps, remove crank caps, remove crank and the replace rear main seal, then reinstall and torque everything back to spec. Some guys will tell you you can do it with the engine in the car, which is true but very difficult and you'll probably end up with a leak again so kinda counter productive and a waste of money. At this point you might as well replace all the bearings too.

Thank you for your reply. I figured that was the only way unfortunately. I’m not sure why the mechanic didn’t do it when the engine was out, but I can’t have it leaking forever, that’s for sure. Thank you again

No problem at all. I'm sure others will chime in with some things but I wanted to state the quick basics for you so you could get the ball rolling so to speak. Best of luck!
