Chris- Yeah, the 4's should be open. I think that those stickers are the closest anyone is going to get to the original. I think they will satisfy 99% of the people that look at it. As Tim said, if your looking that close, you better be invited

I like them. Its better than not having one at all IMO

I agree with everything Jason said. Bought ones are better than mine for sure, but again who is going to look that close? Here is a 72 original I scanned, note the numbers aren't centered, seems every decal is different how its typed up, they are all over the place. The 4's are open.

There has to be someone out there who has access to the correct font for these things. Does anyone know how or if this is weighted in concours judging?

    Chris asks
"Does anyone know how or if this is weighted in concours judging?"

The answer to that is NO. We don't ask if your keys are the correct letter codes either. (I hope I never see the day when the judges start asking things like that.)

Thanks for the reply Duane. It seems the more research I do, Concours cars are generally very nice cars, but certainly can be far from perfect and still be gold cars. I had always figured that concours cars were the best of the best. Is there something similar to Top-Flight (corvette stuff) for buicks?

I really like the way the corvette guys have the judging set up for that class. Every major part (alt, egr valve, wheel etc) has a point value assigned for correctness so if you are building a car you can spend the money where it does the most good. Also, its cut and dried so the judges don't make "personal" decisions that not everyone will agree with.

I also like the way the Corvette judging differentiates between "originality" and "condition." It shows appreciation for both types of cars/parts. Original parts are seldom in perfect condition, but perfect (reproduction) parts can never be original.

Also, they break out the Concourse guys separate from Joe Blow, so they compete only against those of similar affliction.

This is the closest I could find. I had to use two different font styles to get it close. The top one is standard and the bottom is bold.

    Guys,
Not to take over this thread but, "original is original and restored is restored".

By this I mean that in our judged classes (400 point system) allowances have to be made for different production plants, as well as reproduction parts.

We do not have the luxury of having only 1 production plant, like the Corvettes do. Instead we are more like the Chevelles and other cars that were produced all over the country.

Now we do split up our points, just like the AACA, Corvette, and other clubs do, with Authenticity, Workmanship, and Condition. The only difference is we do not "publish" a list of part vs point deductions, or have a book listing what part finish is correct for any given model and year. Frankly there are too many variables to write a book like that.

Now, in the past some events (non-Buick, and invitation only) have been judged with a "Platinum" Class set of rules. These start with 1000 points, with any reproduction part getting 1/2 it's point value deducted right off the top. This type of system will certainly split the "chaff from the wheat", but the problem is no "restored" car, whether it is a Buick or not, could survive such scrutiny, only low mileage original cars would. And, in this class the differences in typed "fonts" WOULD be adressed, as would correct date coded/part numbered mufflers etc. (It takes a lot of homework to judge something like this, that's why it is invitation only.)

Regardless of how the 400 point system is used in the future, I will not have to worry about it. My car should be done for next season, and I am looking forward to being a participant, and letting others handle the Judging duties from now on.

Haven't the GTO or Chevelle folks solved this problem yet? (Or are they just not as picky as we are... :eek2: )
