Since I enjoy reading kill stories here and there has seemed to be a lull in this section lately, I figured I'd post a recent one. So, a couple weeks back, I decided to take the Buick out for a spin. I'm heading home on a fairly major 4 lane road at about 6 p.m. when I see a 05-09 Mustang GT up in front of me. I meet him at the light, no cars in front or behind. Driver is a guy in his late thirties.

I pull the stalk into first gear and the light turns green. I ease onto the pedal, expecting him to jump on it. He rolls out and gently shifts into 2nd and 3rd. I figure he must have looked at me coming and figured my Skylark wasn't worth wasting gas on, even after listening to the heavy lope from the exhaust and the lifters chattering away. I roll into it a bit in first and throw it into second a bit past 3 grand. This must have gotten his attention as he sped up a bit. As fate would have it, we met at the next red light, again with no cars around.

I pull it back into first, wait for it to turn green, and gently roll out. We're both hesitant, lightly rolling into the throttle. At about 20 mph, I hear him jump on it and I follow suit. I wind out first and shift at 5500. His nose is almost at my back bumper. As he's rowing the gears, I immediately notice a whhheeeeiii!. Well, that sure sound like a blower... I stay in it through second, noticing him losing ground on every shift but managing to hang in there, just behind me now. I'm a bit into third and realize I should have let off by now, as being at 4000 rpm in 3rd with 2.76 gears is really hauling.

I stay next to him, head through a green light and we meet at the next red. We both look over and give each other a mutual thumbs up. I shout to him "is that supercharged?" He replies "just a little one" with a smirk on his face. He asks me if I want to run again, and as the light turns green, I shout back "Sure!" Coming out of the hole hot, I lose traction. He gains a few feet on me as I pedal the car, trying to hook the M/T radials back up. It grabs and I lay into it. We're neck and neck to 65 mph in first. I start gaining on him, little by little. I shift into drive and let off, having just nosed him out by about a foot and traffic quickly approaching. I move into the left turn lane to head home and he comes by, waving goodbye. Overall, a good time on an empty street with another respectful muscle car owner.

nice ... but watch out. Like he said, its a small blower. Around here there are guys with cars that look like lightly modded mid-13 to mid-14 stangs that'll run well into the single digits :eek2:

BTW, how's the 8.2 holding up ? I lunched 2 of them once I upped the power past arond 450hp... LOL both died street racing needing a tow home

The 8.2 is hanging in there. Last time I was at the track, it was just cross your fingers on every pass. It managed to survive three 1.9 second 60 foots. On the street, with the air bags not inflated, that open diff. doesn't have a chance of hooking up if I really give it the beans between 0-20 mph, so not too much trouble. Luckily, it wont need to too much longer. I'll be sending an 8.5 I have to Jim (Monzaz) sometime after new years for a build with a posi, moser axles, and I'm debating between 3.42 and 3.73 gears. Looking for some 11.9x's with that plus some carb tuning and swapping out my flex fan for an f-body Lt1 fan I've got lying around.

I've loved the videos of Big Red since I got my 68 a few years back. Great to see another member of the stepchild nation out there beating the pavement.

My sisters(shes 45) got an 04 GT with 360hp at the rear wheels and that car will run the sox of my Riv. I drove it and was really impressed as I was getting solid rubber after hitting 3rd gear. It will even run with my KZ1000. Hopefully, someday, the old Buick will hold its own against a car like that.
