Yes, the cross reference for PPG 3885 points to GM WA8743 code 28 which is what I used back around '93. Devon
col, did you go with the cheap stuff.... mb or the better stuff dc? or a mix PPG DBCSC Gallon 3885 $420.05 PPG DCU2042 Gallon Low Voc Speed Clear $215.60 PPG DCX61 Quart High Solids Urethane Hardener $97.20 PPG DT885 Gallon Warm Temperature Reducer $47.55 PPG MBCB Gallon 3885 $121.20 PPG MC161 Gallon H. S. Urethane Clear $67.30 PPG MH168 Quart Slow Topcoat Harnener $43.30 PPG MR187 Gallon Slow Reducer $23.95 or a mix to get best bang for the buck? what color primer did you use? light gray?
Mike, 17 years ago, for the topcoats I used the top-of-the-line PPG Deltron acrylic urethane basecoat with several coats of Deltron Delglo acrylic urethane clear. I have no idea how their modern paint lineup compares today. With PPG and their in-class competitors you generally get what you pay for. A competent shop should be able to tell you how much of each component will be required to cover your car. Don't forget to consider doorjambs, underside of the trunk, etc. as additional area needing to be covered. I used PPG's olive green DP40 epoxy primer on any bare steel and under all body filler, then used DP400 high build epoxy primer which was a pale yellow color back in the day. Finished with a light gray sealer to prevent any of the yellow or green coats to influence the black sapphire deep blue basecoat. Devon
yea my lil bro just painted his car in autobody..looked at his can and he used the cheaper mbcb paint...not sure what clear he used though 1 gallon of paint will be more then enough to do the whole car and jambs. i'm thinkings about useing the cheaper paint as his turned out nice(hopefully get 5 coats or atleast 4 then get the top of the line clear. not sure if i'll go with the cheaper or better reducer and hardner.. forgot to get a price quote of primer sealer...oh well thanks for the reply though!
Speak with the shop about the primer you're planning to use. If it's a light or medium grey color, and you cover every part of the car that's going to get paint, you might be able to skip the primer/sealer. The only reason I needed it was to obtain the grey base color that would compliment the dark blue code 28 basecoat. Of course that was then. Things have changed and they will know better than I. Good luck! Devon
Thanks, that means a lot to me coming from you. The car's been through a lot and the paint has held up well over time. The pictures don't show all the chips and blemishes. I don't apologize for that since it's a driver. I think it's weathered time better than I have in many respects! Devon
