The time has come to get rid of the incorrect hood tach that came on the 71 and buy a correct one.
It seems to me that I've seen some posts regarding someone's (Poston?, Year One?, Someone else?) hood tach not working right, or breaking easily.

Who makes the best Buick reproduction hood tach?
I'm not sure which engine is going to end up in this car in the long run, and of the 3 candidate engines I have, each has a different ignition in it:

Mallory Unalite - Accel Super Coil/HEI - Stock HEI

If that makes a difference, I'd like the Hood Tach to be able to hold up with whichever we end up using.

    ..penny for your thoughts??
    Thanks!

When you do find one, I would be interested in your incorrect one if it work. A friend of mine has a 69 goat and was very pleased with the year one unit.

    Good luck, Kevin

    Hi Kevin
I already have it on eBay here.
I didn't bother offering it here, because it's not "correct" for anything. It's not a GTO tach as I thought it was when we first got the car.

So.. anyone have any opinions on the Poston / Year One tachs?
I see they are about the same price. One is backlit like a new tach, and one uses reflected light like the originals.
Of course, they both claim to be better. I'm not too concerned about lighting.... but I DO care about the electronics. Which one is better?

I'd really like to get one of them on order soon (or from a 3rd place???), so that I can have it ready to install by the time the auction ends for my old tach.

I do not think the vedict is in. They do not make them themselves and for all we know may be from the same manuf.

I would buy the cheaper price unit from www.opgi.com which is about $170 less their current 15% sale. (You have to paint the cover to match but I am sure you knew that.) In my experience this is less than the minimum charge of at least one facility to repair a defective one. I bought one from YO but because of price would have bought from OPG if I knew at the time. I will say that OPG compared to YO has sorry service.

Hey RICK I have the year one tach i think it is correct looking one.BUT when the car is not used you have to hit it to get it to work. I have heard this is a common problem.I have talked to a few people at shows and they were doing the same thing. It works fine after that.

Wow.. I won't buy a tach if its common to have to smack it to get it to work. Whats up with that? I can't hardly believe that. :Dou:

Anyone have any luck with the Poston or OPGI tachs?
OPGI doesn't have a picture, or tell much about theirs on the website. I wonder if it's the same as Poston or Year One's tachs?

I have a Year One tach that I bought to replace my non-working original GSX tach. The tach is a great reproduction and I can't find a visual difference when mounted on the car ( underneath it is a little different). I have had no problems with mine and would highly recommend it. Do a search as I posted a few pics a couple of months ago.

Well.. I see a few opinions from Year One tach owners (both good and bad)... but no one has any experiance with the Poston or OPGI tachs?

    Rick;
I have the poston hood tach.
And I too have to tap it on a hot Sunny day, to get it to work.
I sent my first one back, because of this. Second one does the
same thing. When they looked at the tach. They told me they
    could not find a problem.
If I am correct. the tachs from Poston & Yearone are they same tachs. I am not sure about OPGI. When I sent the tach in,
It was shipped directly to the manufacture. They told me that they
    were the same tachs.
The tach works good besides being in the direct sunlight.
It could be a hot day, with no sun. No problems
I don't understand why it does that.
Just a guess, OPGI tachs are probably the same tachs
If you would like, I could try and find out where the tach is actually built.

The Year One and Poston websites describe them quite differently. I suppose they could be the same, but I doubt it.
    :Do No:

    Year One description:
This hood tach has a polycarbonate shell which won't crack, chip, break or warp. The bezel is concours-quality reproduction; lens is glass like the original. Face of the tach is painted with galvanized metal paint and the numbers and redline (5,000 rpm for this unit) are colored. Tach is backlit for visibility at night. All internal circuitry is state-of-the-art, and is calibrated to within 150 rpm over the entire sweep. Instructions are included for mounting purposes

    Poston Description:
The tach became a factory installed option on any 1971-1972 GS or Skylark. All parts are 100% compatible with the original hood tachs. Movements are OEM. Circuit boards built using all new components. None of our circuit boards have failed. Faces are silk screen installed on an aluminum face. Lamp sockets, connectors and wire used are all new. No used parts go into tachs. They are accurate with 100 RPM. Beware of a cheaper reproduction on the market. Their letters, numbers and lines are not correct. Their internal circuitry is not original movement like ours. Our tack used reflected light just like the original. Theirs uses illumination and the tach appears nothing like the original at night. Our tach is accurate and contains all new OEM parts.

I'm hoping to order a tach this weekend, or maybe Monday at the latest.

From the replies so far it sounds like they're all JUNK. Why do we put up with this? :(

    How about the OPGI tach?
