Well I know that's alot to ask but .....what is not excessively loud but great flow? Looking for 3 inch.... SpinTech? StraightLine's mufflers? UltraFlo? Bruce
I saw a graph that I think was distributed by Torque Tech comparing the 2.5 inch Walker Dynomax to others, including Flowmasters. The Dyno max was quieter and flowed better in the long case. Also they concluded that all other things being equal the longer the case the better the flow. I can tell you from using the 20 inch Dyno max 17749 they are not quiet ---just quieter. I put a Dr Gas x pipe on one GS and it helps, but it is still not quiet. I have had no experience with the 3 inch system except it seems people report the 3 inch is louder than the 2.5 inch.
We put a 3" X-pipe and 3" long case Dynomax's on Mike's car and it is much quiter than the 2-1/2" dual Hooker system that was on it. It is also faster:bglasses:
Hey Bruce, Back when I was building my car (5 or 6 year ago) I did a bunch of checking on Mufflers. The ones that claimed they were the quitest and flowed the best were "Spin Traps". That's what I went with. They aren't quite like a stocker by any means, but they are quiter than flowmasters........ You may want to give them a call and see if they have any newer test results.
I'm also looking for something quieter to replace my flowmasters, would you happen to know the part #? Are these the "super turbo" long case (17793) 16" mufflers? Thanks!
Hey Bruce, I've only run them with the Dr Gas X pipe....... with the X pipe, there is little to no drone going down the freeway.
I use Scott Brown's mufflers, and would highly recommend them except he doesn't sell them any more. Although he still shows them on his website- http://www.racemufflers.com/stmufflers.htm ...? I think the large-case Magnaflow mufflers are basically the same design as Scott's. -Bob Cunningham
Some of the "straight-thru" designs do flow the most CFM by far, such as Ultra-flo and magnaflow are two good ones. Check dynomax website for flow comparsion. I like the magnaflows(quieter) in a large case 5"x11"x22" ;offset inlet/outlet 2.5" or 3". the Dyno max 17770 is also a nice muffler,5.5"x11"x20" case 'offset inlet/outlet 3"only WITH 3" internals.
Here's an interesting test on a 455 Le Mans wagon: It's been around a while - new mufflers have since come out. http://www.boyleworks.com/ta400/psp/exhaust.html
I've ran the Dynomax on my last 4 cars (2 Buicks and 2 Mustangs). I like them, but I don't really like it that loud any more either.
Mine aren't that lous at all. I'm running the super turbo's with TA full length headers and the X pipe. Sounds really sweet. My goal was to achieve a sound that wasnt too loud (since my LeSabre was a drone-a-thon) and I think I got it right this time.
Magnaflows outflow and are quieter than any of the Flowmaster models. Any straight through design is going to outflow a chambered muffler and frequently are quieter. Use a Dynomax Ultraflow or a Magnaflow (use longcases) and an X-pipe, you'll love it.
I've always heard that Borla's flow the BEST by far, and sound VERY GOOD. But has anyone ever tried them with the 3" X-pipes and 3" tailpipes?o No: They are an awful LOT of $$, that's for SURE!:eek2: Any experiences??
Borla's My boss and I put a 454 in his chevell and he put 3" with Borla's.Took them right back off and went with the Flow Masters. The Borla's sounded like a ratty set of glass packs.
Clint, did it have 3" tail pipes or x-pipe/h-pipe setup with the Borla's? Or did it just turn down by the rearend?
Jeff, It had a H-pipe and Hooker super comp headers, 3'' to The muffs and if I remeber correctly they put 2.50 from the muffs over the rearend and out by the quarters. Clint
