I know there are a lot of bad reproductions out there when it comes to door weatherstripping. I'm looking to re-do my door jams and want something that fits like factory and won't cause any issues. What's the general consensus on brand for door weatherstripping?
I used Steele Rubber weatherstripping on my '68 post car. It took months of door slamming until the stuff compressed enough. I even had to adjust my latches. Maybe they're better now, I bought those in 2001.
"Reproductions" in the true sense of the word arent made. Whats available are replacements. The A&M soffseals are the least crappy IMO. The metro molded rubber ones didnt fit on my doors. They seemed to be made one size too small. I posted a thread about my door weatherstrip fiasco with pictures a while back. The Parts place came out with a latex set that is supposed to be the best out there. I havent seen them, but i have my doubts
Again, Soff Seal. All others are wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to stiff. I've found a huge problem to be the large block/lump at the A-piller end. When that butts against the roof rail seal block/lump it forces the door to be difficult close. They are just too dense.
Maybe I got lucky, but when I had the car repainted in 2009, I replaced the weatherstripping with that from Steele Rubber. It fit well except for the trunk lid, we had to shave the weatherstrip to make it fit.
I used these "The Parts place came out with a latex set" and I will use them on my stage 1 when it is painted.
I used the Parts place latex and they are the best ones. I still needed to trim them a bit but they put the others to shame. I have used both Soffseal and Metro by the way.
Sounds like the latex stuff from the parts place is the way to go. I'll probably be ordering that shortly if nobody else has any suggestions.
Dave, do you have any pictures of the strips installed? Im curious to see what they look like compared to the soffseals
In the first picture I had to trim it a little near the top where it looks a little ragged(I could have done a better job) This had to be done as this part dragged on the window when it went up and done. In the third picture I need to open the slot where the window sits a little as it was a bit tight. Overall a pretty simple install. I used the plastic nibs instead of the screws as the correct ones Are tough to find.
Just ordered a set of TPP door weatherstrip, so I'll post a review once it comes in. If it goes well I'll probably end up doing their roof rail seal as well.
TPP door weatherstrip and U-jamb pieces installed. Overall impressions: High quality part and fitment was 98% right. The big block up by the fender (where the glass channel is) took a little cutting to fit properly and is slightly stretched at the mount pin. I think it'll be ok, but time will tell. No problems getting the doors to close properly whatsoever. I'll be ordering the roof rail strip next from them since these worked out so well.
did my 70 with metro, got it from tamraz cheep and fit great, no issues doors, roofrail, and trunk, key is to clean channels real good
I used the metro stuff from Rockauto.com. Trunk, roof rail, door, quarter window, small little u shaped block on the quarter window as well. 227. dollars. I priced the same stuff at steele and it would have been 600 and something. The door is a little tighter but beign such a big heavy door it dosent take much extra effort to close. I just had to adjust the angle of the window a little and it fits great. I haven't drove it yet but even with cracked crusty original rubber you could barley hear any wind noise when on the freeway.
Update. After leaving my door closed for 1 week the doors close almost by themselves now. took the hose to it and no leaks.
