BBB w/1970 Heads on 1971 Block & HP/TQ guess

Discussion in 'Street/strip 400/430/455' started by section8mainiac, Oct 24, 2023.

  1. I just acquired a set of Stage 1 heads (1970 # 1231786) from a board member and will be installing on my late 1971 # 1238861 block.

Question 1. Can I use .010 steel head gaskets on this combo, or which ones do I need to use? Can they be found?

Question 2. How much HP/TQ would you guess out of this combo? Hoping for a decent increase over the 73 small valve heads i am replacing.

455 .030 over Wiesco Forged Pistons .040 in the hole
    TA_288-94H 230-240 114 cam
    1970 Ported Stage 1 heads
    Reworked 800 CFM Q-Jet
Points eliminator/advance kit/limiter bushing etc on distributor.
With .010 head gasket, I am at 10:1

This will be my convertible with 3.23 gears and a TH 400. Hoping for a good cruiser.

Can only use the steel shims if your block is an early 71....with round water ports.....or use the .027 cometics

My combo is about 9.5:1, .030 over, with Stage 1 heads, ported manifolds and 3.55 gears. With the 290-94H cam (226/235), it runs 12.90s, which figures at 330 or so rear wheel hp, so 420-440 gross maybe? Runs and drives great.
