Picked up the car recently. Did some work on it today and noticed some rust in the battery tray area. Any thoughts on what to do to fix?
Well your best bet is to find a local welder who can cut out the rust and make repairs. Unfortunately, this is super common as the battery acid rots the metal.
Never write off POR 15. It isn't a cure all, but sometimes..... That was all done with POR 15 paste and some fiberglass matting strips. Again, not perfect, but it is a useable battery tray now.
...see if you can find a rt side core support repair kit. As for tray get a repro if as bad as core support. I used electrolysis on mine...
I had similar issues with my 64 Wildcat, but more rust in the structure under the battery tray and no available repair panels. See my thread on my repair.
I had the same issues. Ended up getting a core support patch kit, new inner fender well and new battery tray. Had a local shop cut out the rot and weld in the patch kit and install the new fender well.
I like this idea. I see a bunch for Skylarks, and GS, GSX none specific for the Riviera. Would those work?
With the price and ever decreasing availability of repro parts, this old school method of patching stuff is going to come back. You can do wonderful things with fiberglass and epoxy resins.
True..I have worked with glass before with good results. Maybe I will go that route, sand/cut all the rust out. Seal it with Por-15 or Rust Encapsulator. Then put some glass/epoxy in there.
