    gotbuick What, me worry?

If you pull off a stock balancer from a 455 and replace it with another stock 455 balancer (both used) will this work or not? What about installing a Romac balancer in place of the stocker.

Same for the flex plate. Will stock slid out to be replaced with a JW wheel (ext. balance)?

This is for a put together running engine. The old balancer looks pretty cracked at the rubber ring.

I know this is a dumb question, but if I don't ask it will stay that that way.

Hi Jerry, is the engine still external balance?

Yes, you can change stock balancer>stock balancer. Remove any weights that are in the original and place in the same locations in the new. The weights are round and go around the outside edge.

Romac, I'm not sure...should. Does anyone know if they are neutral or external balanced?

Stock flex plate, yep, but make SURE the weight is in the same location! Although these parts should be identical weights optimally, its not necessary.

Of course the BEST thing to do, is to bring the entire reciprocating assy (pistons and rods assembled, rings, rod bearings, crank, balancer, flex plate, and bolts for the balancer and flex plate and have it all converted to internal balance.) Then that makes the balancer and flex plate neutral balance, and they can be changed at any time with any weight parts.

Guess you can't do that now. Hope this helps ya, take it easy! :beer

    Thanks Jeff,

It is an externally balanced engine. I did not know that the weights in the stock balancers were removable.

I would like to put my external balance SFI stuff on this engine. I realize that a total rebalance is best, but is just till the new motor is built.

    Thanks again for the ideas!:TU:

    Hi Guys,

Jerry....the next best thing you can do (other than tearing the engine down and rebalancing the entire assembly) is to take the new balancer and flexplate along with the old ones you remove to the local machine shop and have them match-balanced. Those old ones are part of a balanced assembly, right?:Do No: That will get you alot closer than doing nothing but just bolting the new stuff up.:TU:

    Hope this helps....:)

Bingo - thats exactly what I did when I cracked my original at the keyway after the engine was built.

Cost under $100.....cant really remember what exactly but I know it was under that. Good piece of mind after $pending the money to have the assembly ballanced in the first place.

    Whoa!

I'm glad this thread came up! I checked all six balancers I have and they are all diff. Some times it doesn't pay to be an ex chebbie man.

So if I balance the whole assembly do I take the slugs out of the balancer? What about the flex plate? B4 I take it in?
