I'm back. I've only put about 100 miles on the car in the last month and it's running rough again. It's not backfiring but it's not running smoothly either. My guess is it's either the carb, the choke, or something in the gas line. It hesitates when I try to accelerate and will eventually get up to the speed limit but it takes a lot longer than it should. Is there an easy way to determine what's causing the problem? There's no fuel filter in the carb so could that be the cause? Any advice would be appreciated....

If yo uaren't running a fuel filter it is very likely something has made its way into the carb and causing issues.

I'd also check the mechanical advance. Depending on whether or not you lubed the weights and with what, they can get gummed up and cause issues.

Did it start running rough all of a sudden? Might be time for a carb rebuild and a fuel filter.

I don't know what the mechanical advance is. How can I determine if something made its way into the carb and is causing the problem?

What does it cost to get the carb rebuilt? Can I add a fuel filter onto the rubber part of the gas line or do I have to put the little one back into the front of the carb?

I am pretty sure his 86 has a 7 pin HEI without any mechanical advance, just electronic advance.

Most likely junk in the carb from running no filter.

  Absolutely correct. This has been going on so long I forgot we are talking about the 307 Gutless Cutlass motor:Dou: New advice, Transplant in a SBB, or a BBB.

No worries... I am never right, ask my wife!:spank:

He had it good for a while there, most likely junk in the carb from not using a fuel filter.

I have a 307 in my Caddy that is why I know it has a 7 pin.

I am using a 7 pin HEI on my turbo car so I can adjust the timing with my laptop using megasquirt!

I had a 307 in an 86 Regal. It was the slowest car I have ever owned. My Riviera would run circles around it.

You are correct-It has the 307 Olds V8. I installed an inline filter today and sprayed a bunch of carb cleaner down the front two barrels so hopefully that will make it run better. I'll check out that other thread that one of you guys recommended. Thanks.... :bglasses:

Have you confirmed that all the plugs are firing? You could have a bad plug wire or plug causing the issue, I would start there.

Buy a can of fuel injector cleaner and put in into your fuel tank... If there is something that can be dissolved then you will have better luck by running the cleaner trough the internals of the carb vs. spraying carb cleaner at the throttle blades.... If that does not help it might be time for a rebuild of the carb.

I replaced all the plug wires a couple of months ago. I wouldn't be surprised if it still has the original plugs in it but it doesn't sound like it's only running on 7 cylinders. I'll buy some fuel injector cleaner and dump it in the gas tank and see what happens. Thanks.... :beers2:

Take it to some professionals who have it in front of them and have them fix it. Seriously.

I had a 83 Buick Regal with a 267 and thoiught it was quite peppy for it's size considering all the polution crap.

I've only driven it four miles since I installed the fuel filter and put the fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank and it's already running better. Thanks for the suggestion.... :beer
