Is there any way to tell if a particular axle came with my car? Did they put the VIN number on them like the blocks, and tranny? I know about the date codes, but is there a more specific way to ID the axle?

There won't be a Vin number on the axle. On one of the axle tubes a few inches from the pumpkin there should be some letters that correspond to the ratio and whether or not it's a posi. If those letters came in your model car, then at least the differential is correct for the car (although maybe not original).

If you want to see if it's possibly original, then start hunting date codes and see if they make sense with your cars build date.

If you find the letters and post them, I have a master chassis parts book through '72 that has decoding information.
