Appears to be grease

  1. 63 lesabre 401 /410 wildcat.Car has 38,000 miles this glob was under the driver side valve cover breather.is this supposed to be there? I've never seen anything like this.i inherited this car from my dad who was the second owner since 1978,I'm sure he ran tropartic oil in it.

    It sure does look like grease. What does it taste like?:D
    There should be a shield attached to the rocker shaft supports, it keeps oil from splashing into the breather. If that was missing, the greasey stuff could be drainback from the breather?
    Otherwise, the shaft, rockers, and head look exceptionally clean.

    Maybe someone packed the oil pump with it to prime it?

    That's wheel Bearing grease- and that's a handly place for it should you ever need to pull over and repack your ft wheel bearings!
    On a serious note, ages age a seller would do that in hopes of thicking up the enigine oil to reduce engine noise .
    If that's the case then the car was not driven long enough for engine oil splash up there in the valve cover to mix in with the grease.
