I haven't tried it. The MSDS says it's mostly solvents such as acetone. There's a little zinc phosphate which is likely the rust treatment.

I liked a product called Picklex, but it's gotten stupid expensive. It's largely phosphoric acid, kinda like Ospho.
I often just use phosphoric acid as a metal treatment/etch.

I'd feel better giving it a scrub down with Ospho before painting it. The Rust-Oleum sounds like a product for lazy people!

we used to use a product made by Dupont called "Kiwk Prep" 244S. It is now discontinue and have not found anything like it. It was a light blue color product in a clear plastic bottle. It was used for bare metal when the oxidation used to start it would keep that oxidation away for days, while you were getting ready to shoot primer for sealing. It would even remove that light rust oxidation that you can almost see happening in front of you and protect the metal. great stuff! Today I would use a like coat of Ospho.

I wouldn't despair just yet, the 244S appears to be nothing more than isopropyl alcohol + water, unless they changed the formulation at some point.

I’ve used it before. It’s ok, don’t expect miracles. Project farm did a test on various rust encapsulators and it scored fairly well, especially for the cost. Probably the best cost : performance ratio.
