I just had my sinus surgery today. Boy is this an experiance. My surgery was at 9 this morning and I got home at 7 tonite. That first couple of hours after waking up was no fun at all. But they do give you some really nice drugs to help you sleep.

This was to repair a couple of broken noses that I have gotten over the years. I was doing about 80% of my breathing out of the left side of my nose. Modern medicine is a wonder. At least they don't pack your head with 75ft of cotton any more.

    Well back to bed now.

I know I could use it, but I probably won't bother. My nostrils look like yin and yang - only one break though.

Oh yeah. Most miserable experience ever. To my knowledge, my nose had never been broken, but my ENT recommended the surgery to cure some acute allergies. He corrected a slightly deviated septum, but also corrected what he called inflamed turbinates. In his words, "I fillet'd them and scraped them good." After seeing my recovery, my wife swore never to undergo that.

I feel for you. Make them keep giving you major drugs.

OL MY!!...I know your pain all to well, I had a terrible allergie problem after I quit smoking, I had it done to clean out the right sinus cavity and to repair what they called a slite deviated septum issue, It was done in 98, I didn't sleep for 3 days, blisters in my mouth from breathing only through it, when I was 12 I was burned over 35% of my body, 15% 3rd degree...I really believe, although the time to heel was MUCH shorter than the burns, the sinus deal was much worse to deal with...the bad part, I was back with troubles again about 10 months after I had it done and to this day, sinus problems are every day for me....I hope it all goes well for you.

my son had a deviated septum fixed when he was 19 years old. he was ready to come home after 2 hours of waking up in recovery. after we were home he took his pain medicine for only a day, he doesnt like the way it makes him feel. i have no idea how he got such a high tolerance to pain, myself on the other hand is the exact opposite. plus being young i am sure helps.

Mine went fine. I had it done about 10 years ago.

It was kind of funny actually. I had one allergist that kept prescribing stronger and stronger meds to clear up what he thought was swelling in my sinuses. (Like you, I couldn't breathe much at all through one side of my nose.) The meds were really wigging me out, so I went to a new doc and he took one look up my nose and asked me to go have an x-ray. I asked why, and he just said "trust me...". A short time later he puts the picture of my head up and there's 3 distinct bends to the bones in my nose. I'm like "That's not my nose, is it?" It had been broken more than once and I never knew it. A few weeks later, they put me under, and I woke up with a nose full of cotton. (I tried to get up and go home from post-op, and they had to tie me down to the bed, but that is another story. :) ) Anyway, that was that. Now I can breath out of both sides of my nose. As a bonus, it really improved my singing voice.

My dad had this done a long time before I did. Like me, he broke his nose sometime and never knew it. When he went in, they gave him a local instead of putting him out for the operation. This was back in the days when they still used cocaine as a local anesthetic, and my mom said he was having a grand time laughing and telling jokes when they took him out of the OR. He came down pretty hard later, and was laid up for at least four days.

    Hope you get better fast.

Mine wasn't painful at all...when the pulled the splints out that kind of hurt but no pain, it was the discomfort from having my nose totaly closed off and the pressure from it being closed....

    Update

I am feeling pretty good so far. I just have my days and nights mixed up so far as sleeping.
I get the shints taken out tomarrow. The hardest part so far is not being able to blow your nose. I feel like a got a bugar the size of a donut up my nose.

Not exactly something that was high on my to do list, but sometimes you don't have a choice.

    Thanks All

Oof-dah! I had mine straightened out in '98, along with carving 3/4-inch off the back of my soft palate, all to correct sleep apnea.

One week of chemical-induced euphoria is all I really remember, except when I got the splints out. Didn't hurt, just felt like he was tugging on the back of my head, then WOW! :eek2: THAT was in my nose!?!? Not nearly as bad as what Schwartenegger had to do in the movie "Total Recall"

Recovering from the soft palate part, though...that hurt, and learning to swallow all over again - yuck!

I feel for you, but it'll pass, and you'll be way better off. I was amazed at getting a full night's sleep!

OK this is really starting to suck. I am sitting here with a bag of peas on my neck and a bag of ice under the twins trying to get rid of this low grade fever.
Now since I slept all day I will be up all night.
