I'm trying to sell my 72 Skylark, most who come to drive it dont like the play in the steering....cant blame them. Was thinking of replacing with A1 Cardone rebuilt P/S box? as I need to keep expenses low, description says: input shaft diameter .80 in., outputshaft diameter 1.25 in., .....is this a tuff job? Was also thinking of the 12 piece center link, tie rods, idler arm, and ball joint kit from Amazon, would that not help front end sway? Thanks in advance
You should first have the front end checked by a knowledgeable and honest mechanic . See what part is really bad . Inner tie rods and upper ball joints don't go bad that often . Its usually the center link and tie rod ends and lower ball joints . But just don't replace parts without finding the offending part first . Most shops will tell you that you need it all . That's how they make money !!
If your steering gear isn’t leaking, pull it and paint it black (somewhat sloppily) and you’ll have a Cardone quality rebuild! I agree with 4ever-find out where the slack is and fix that. If it’s the gearbox, talk to Hector on here. Patrick
I have a good used steering box. It was removed with the ps pump and hoses as one unit. Came out of a low mileage skylark.
I took my steering box from my 64 Wildcat to my local Napa store who sent it in for rebuild, since they had none in the warehouse. I'm not sure who did the rebuild, could have been Cardone. As it just leaked it didn't need much. No problems since, about 8000 miles. Over the years I've had better success with Napa reman parts than the other guys.
