Off today from work, so i went junkyard shopping. Went out a little further then usuall and look what i found.
Thebent red hood on that 70 or 71 Ford Torino GT is depressing to look at. That hood must be worth some dough.
Naw, it's a green band that ran acroos the back of the car, in the picture looks like it can be a spoiler from the front veiw.
I grew up in Tidewater. There were several yards down toward Suffolk that got over-grown like that. Also, one near Dam Neck/Oceana, that was pretty soggy. In 1968 & 1969, I worked for Hoff Cadillac/Oldsmobile in Norfolk. We sold several of those (Olds)f-85 "strippers like in 2 of your pics. They were post coupes and had a heater and a way to change gears and not much else. Also had Chevy 6 cylinder engines. o No: Next time you're there, look and see if either one has a "HOFF" sticker on the trunk-lid. Anyway, looks like you found yourself a goldmine.
Howdy-hi there, Mr. Big B Winn, Yes, sir, could y'all please state the exact name of the salvage yard in the Tidewater area, that way we can git ahold of 'em and ask about purchasing some items. Thank you so very much! You are awesome. Hey, now, lookie here, we lived in Virginia in 1967 near Newport News, right on the Army base there at Fort Eustis. My dad was one of the jet-propelled helicopter pioneers at the time. He received the first two Huey Cobra attack helicopters and taught Ground Flight School there at Ft. Eustis. There are some great memories from those days, do y'all remember that radio and television ad for Smith Corner Motors? How about Valleydale pork products, hooray for Valleydale, hooray for Valleydale! The old man bought a new 1967 Chevrolet Biscayne station wagon in August, 1967, one that had been settin' around the lot at the local Chevy dealer, but I don't know which one it was. Big B, if you can git the name of that there junk yard out to us, we will be forever grateful to you, my friend. Thanks a milliion, take care.
I am very curious about which engine is in that Torino. If it is either a "C" or "J" code, fifth character on VIN, then grab the carb, heads, and maybe intake, if you can. Should that be a 429 Cobra Jet with an original Quadrajet carb, try to get it, and I'll split the profit with you.  If it's a Super Cobra Jet engine, it might have the original Holley carb, which is also desirable. In either case, I'd also need to know if its an auto or 4 speed. If a 4 speed, it should be a toploader. Check the diff too, especially if it's the 429, as it could be a Drag Pack car. Better yet, get the entire VIN and post it so we can decode it. (unless you're also a Ford nut, and already know all this) If the fifth character is an "F", it denote a base 429 engine, which still could have the good heads. If it's a 429, also check for either "D0VE, or D1VE" casting marks. That could mean a desirable 4 bolt block. If the VIN does not indicate a 429, it still could have the good 351 Cleveland.
That junkyard near Warsaw is pretty good. I plan to go back there again myself. There is another yard SW of there that has a crapload of old cars but it is pretty overgrown. It is near I-64. I have to remember the name of it and directions that I will post here. Rt 33 off of I-64 near West Point,Va. The yard is on New Kent Highway( Rt 249 ) about a 1/4 of a mile north of 33 on the right. It looks like an old gas station. A couple thousand oldies in there. Still can't think of the name.
Hi Ted, That yard is called, "Philbates" and the guy that runs it is George. He is about 100 years old (really only about 80). He is diabetic and he's going blind but still knows where every car is located. He'd sell the yard and the real estate complete for about a million. :dollar: I think it would be a money maker but I'm too old. o No: You could make that back in a year on e-Bay. He'd even hold a mortgage for the right person. Hope that helps; maybe way too much info.
That's correct! Philbate's. I go to dozens of different yards in several different states every year and can't remember the names of some of them, but I can still drive right to them without checking the map, though. And I don't have one of those dumb Tom-Tom's or NAV in my truck:laugh:
JEFF; I just came back from Philbates. He is crushing cars as I type this. He is keeping some of them like the Cadillacs and the convertibles. He would sell the business for 1 million, the business and the land are 5 million. Three years ago he was at $750,000, the price is going up as the cars are going away.
OK, thanks for all your jawing about it. Here is the EXACT info y'all really need to call the gentleman and make a deal for whatever y'all need: Philbates Auto Wrecking Inc 16238 New Kent Hwy Lanexa, VA 23089 (804) 843-9787 HURRY! These great cars and parts won't last longer than your latest fantasy.
