I went to a new track the other day and was attempting (not succeeding) :3gears: to get the ole' 455 to hook a set of Firestone 295/50/15's. After a couple smokey passes resulting in high 8's on the 1/8th mile track, I overheard some kids disrespecting my car. I walked over to their pit and asked mif they wanted to put fifty bucks on the line. The owner of the Mitsubishi Evo with the aftermarket turbo, NOS, and laptop in the passenger seat said, "sure, no problem." and reminded me that he had just run 8.53 to my 8.91 and 8.71. We lined up and I made the slowest launch of my life and didn't even get into the secondaries enroute to an 8.23 pass versus his 8.55. I drove back to my pit and started working on my timing and carb settings trying to soften up the launch and get a decent pass when I heard my friend chuckle. As I looked up, I saw the kid walking away and noticed a ten and two twenties on my trailer under a wrench. :Brow:

As I was waiting in the staging lanes to make another pass, another ricer came up to me and said, and I love this, "DUUUUUDE!!!! YOU SMOKED HIM AND WASN'T EVEN TRYING! WHAT IS THIS THING ANYWAY?" :eek2: I proceded to tell him it was just an old Buick with a small cam and a set of headers and he just shook his head and walked back to his Civic. Needless to say, I wasn't bothered the rest of the night with the import crowd. :Do No:

After detuning the car and letting the tire pressure down to 15 psi, I managed a 7.99 with a 1.81 60-foot and decided to go back to the slicks and 1.66's and mid 7's the car usually runs at my home track.

I respect the import guys who build and race their cars as much as the next guy, but can't stand the ones who run other cars down. You give respect, you get respect! :Smarty:

I bet the guy in the civic is shopping for a muscle car today.

my buddie is an import guy and is seeing how easy it is to make power with a muscle car and have fun with it and the amount of charicter an old car has.

I can't wait for that day. though I'll be the young punk with the laptop on the front seat of my 30+yr old buick. :bglasses:

I'm from Australia and I've never heard anyone mention 1/8th mile times. What does yours make on the quarter to give me a better idea of how guick your wheels are.

    1/4 times

pending gearing and what not his 7.99 would result in something like a 13.30ish and an 8.23 is approximately 13.70ish...correct me if im wrong moparman :TU:

The last time I made a 1/4 mile pass my car went 11.22 at 121mph. Around here all we have are 1/8th mile tracks due to not enough shut-down distance for the new tire technology. I know this doesn't compute with most formulas for 1/8th to 1/4 times, but remember that I run a 3800lb car with 3:73 gears. This means it takes a little more than 660 feet to get all she's got. I usually shift at 4800 on short tracks and 5000 on longer ones. My engine is a 73 455, stock bore and stroke, Poston 107A cam, Poston S-Divider intake, Holley 850 carb, T/A headers, block decked .045 and Stage 1 heads ported and cut .010. The pistons are forged flat-tops and I have ARP head and main studs. Trans is a race prepped TH350 with a PTC 3500 stall. Rear end is a 12 bolt with 3:73 Richmond gears and a spool. I run Mickey Thompson ET slicks in 28X10.5X15 on 15X10 wheels at around 11 psi. My plans include putting the NOS back on and getting into the low 7's on 1/8th mile tracks and mid 10's in the 1/4. As far as the 13 second times, what altitude did you figure? I race at around 600 feet above sea level here. :Smarty:

youre a bit off, waterbox guy. our gn's motor, in another gn ran 6.88 or something... good for 10.7's. our convertible runs low low low 13's and 8.3's in the 8th

I came up with the 13 second times by knowing 13.99 in the quarter is equivlant to 8.54 in thee 1/8...thats what we went by at the track for monitoring ETs for needing helmets and stuff. Question for you though with that size slick do you have any rubbing issues on initial launch?? As far as altitude im not sure its at quaker city in salem ohio though. Is 28 tall about the tallest you can fit in that wheel well?

ive learned that for the most part that 1/8th mile time X 1.56=1/4 time... its pretty accurate, of course there are infinite variables, throttle lift, traction, etc...

I've actually run 29X12.5X15's on my car without tire rub using center hung 8X15 wheels. For the record, my car is a 70 Skylark with a 1 1/2" narrowed 12 bolt out of a 70 Monte Carlo. I did, however have to roll the fenderwell lips in order to prevent rubbing. I also added air shocks for clearance and adjustability for different track conditions. I have more inner fender clearance issues than anything. Especially when it hops the tires.

I couldn't find those timeslips but, if memory serves it was a mid to low 7 at around 90mph. I usually don't run the car all the way out due to bracket racing and not wanting to exceed safe rpm range. I usually cross the 1/8th at around 3800rpm and the 1/4 near 5500. That was with a 100 shot using it sparingly in second gear between 3500-4500 on a cool day. Every time I tried to spray off the line it went up in tire smoke. I have made passes in the 1/8th and kept it in 2nd but slowed down in both mph and ET. Still trying to get the consistency down by changing carbs. My car runs the fastest with fuel practicly running out the pipes. My fastest pass one night was made when the primary float stuck in a 750 Demon during my burnout. It went 3 tenths faster and gained 4mph but I almost couldn't keep it running trying to stage. That's when I went to a 1050 Dominator and found out they don't work too well with Edelbrock dual plane intakes and a spacer/adapter. :Do No: Trying a 1000cfm 4150 next if this 850 doesn't work out.
