Last Saturday Dave Tumas hopped on a plane and delivered a 71 GS Grill he repaired and repainted for me. (He works for US Air.) The grill was nice to start with, but it still had some cracks and a small piece missing. We took it out of the box and compared it to my NOS grille and the two were virtually identical. The colors were so close it wasn't worth talking about. To be honest the paint job on the repaired grill looked better then the NOS one.

Hats off to Dave Tumas for saving another part and bringing it up to show quality.

I'll have to post a pic of my restored grille that Dave did.

Damn, I wish I had a before. I can tell you, it was rough. It had all kinds of spider cracks and distortions in the middle from periodic fender benders and years of torque in every which direction. , not to mention broken studs and cracked teeth everywhere.

He welded (plastic) the studs back on and made all the repairs and straightened it and painted it. A steel reinforcement plate smack dead center, used to strengthen and hold the nose from distorting anymore, is perfectly hidden by the center portion of the grille surround.

As I said, I wish I had the damn car back to put it on. :blast:

I will post a pic when I get a chance.

    Oh yeah.....costs. :Dou:

I think I'll actually leave that up to Dave. Put it this way, you could have a nicer, or AS nice as NOS grille, for A LOT LESS!

I thought there was going to be some labor costs involved, not to mention shipping & handling!:eek2: We'll see.

Hmmm, if its TOO MUCH, I'm just going to have to learn a new skill I guess. :Do No:

    Dave,
No problem with the post, you deserved it for the work you did. If you get my other 69 GS Grill done and bring it up I will take you to an even better restaurant. Hope to see you at the Nats this year, it would be great to have you help judge the Concours Class again.

Yes that was me. The pair of grilles will be a challenge to get a nice one. I will have some parts to help with my side work. let me know if you want to get your spare grille redone in the future.
