ive like the idea some of you have of putting a 200r4 in 65 /3oo skylark so i went to a local bone yard and this guy tells me i need a79 or 8o trans other that those two years it would have a comp box////so is he right or not what one should i look for ??? thanks again pete
As far as I know, all 200-4R's have BOP bellhousings and will bolt up. The best ones to get are the BR-F ones out of the GN's. I got mine off of the turbobuick.com board. Lots of them there. You could probably get one that been rebuilt there for about $600 all ready to go. Cores go for around $200-250 and then you could have it redone to whatever level you need/want.
My BRF Code 200 4R cost me $550 This is a low milage original with Shift Kit. You will also need to consider a few items before you continue also. Torque convertor (Lock up/ Non Lock up) TV cables and Brackets. It can be easy to reach the $1000 mark pretty quickly. Good Luck on your project Phil, What Gear have you decided to run in your application. I am thinking about 390's in overdrive should act like a 261 rear gear when reducing the 33% overdrive. :beer
The guy at the bone yard is wrong. The early models were troublesome unreliable units, you'll want a later model one. I have an 1985 model and there is no computer needed. If you wire the tcc lockup solenoid correctly it will lock in 4th gear only and it requires only one hot wire to the trans. There is lots on info on the 2004R here http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/transmission/transpage.html
Hi, I'm going to keep my 3.73's in the car. 2100 rpm's at 70 mph sounds mighty good to me. My trans is out of an 87 GN and has no electronics. So your "bone yard" guy is a bit of a "bone head." I had also heard to stay away from the earlier ones and really try to get a 85-87 trans, prefereably out of a GN. Also, I had my trans built with the lockup feature. I will be posting pics of the install. I have the lockup kit with switch that screws in where that bolt is in the pic above about 2/3rd's of the way back just to the left of the large "circle" on the trans. It's two pronged and one wire goes to the other side and the number 1 prong on the 4-pin factory plug-in. The other wire goes to your switch in the car. Then just a ground at the 4-pin and you're done.
thanks guys im gathering all the info i can will ccheck out the web site also will look for your pics (phil) thanks pete
Sounds Good Phil, Since I have to setup my rear gear I have not decided 100% on the Ratio but plan on 373 or 390s. Have you decided on your convertor yet? I will be running a 2700/2800 (Orange Stripe) stall with lockup. Looks like we are having to much fun! :Brow:
Coverter is from CK and is one of their 9/11 units with a 2800 rpm stall. I've actually started taking pics today of the install and will make a thread later tonight hopefully.
PM me with the link when you post it. I will not be installing mine till I get my motor back from Jim Burek. Let me know how the Trans Crossmember works out from the 350 to the 200 Conversion. :TU:
My car had a th400 and I just bolted it up. The crossmember worked fine. I did have to trim it a bit on the front side as I have a HUGE aluminum pan on the trans it was a bit close for me.
brf code you guys are all saying brf code ( whats the difference) and since i am goind to put it in a 300v4/65 skylark stock all the way cant i use one out of a442 or monty ??? thanks pete
A BRF coded trans is one out of a Grand National. They also came in some of the SS Monte Carlo's and Hurst 442's from 85-87. There will be a 2x3 tag on the transmission on the passenger side all the way in the back, just in front of where the driveshaft goes in. You can see it from under the car. I've seen blue, pink, yellow colored ones. These transmissions have a different valve body which allows better shifts at higher rpm's. The regular 200-4R's will work, but are definitely not performance oriented and would cost a bit more to redo to make them hold up. Here's a pic of my transmission. You can see the blue tag at the rear of the trans.
200r4 thanks again phil this one is out of a monte so maybe ill get lucky lol ill check the tag but for 75 bucks i cant get hurt post your times with the new trans ok pete
The 350 to 200r4 works great, should be a direct bolt in. I switched from a 400 and had to mess with different front yokes. For a 300 I think any later tranny would be good. Mine is from a 442 and was built from there. The biggest concern is the TV cable setup. There are ways to put together stuff from the yard but I did not feel comfortable with this and had BowTie overdrives make a complete setup for me. I do love being able to cruise down the highway below 2500 rpm or just idle through town at 1500 knowing that all I have to do is mash the throttle and all #%$#% breaks loose with a 4 to 1 downshift.
