Just a quick question. My head unit (Kenwood KDC-MPV5025) does not have a remote turn on wire lead for an amplifier, it doesn't make sense because the deck has front and rear preamp outputs. I was just going to use the power antenna wire, but unlike some units, it only has 12v+ when using the AM/FM radio function, it has no power when using the CD or AUX functions. I could just put a switch onto the remote wire, but I have no more ignition switched 12v outputs on my car. My question is how much current does the remote turn on wire have to be able to support. The manual says absolutely nothing about the remote turn on current rating. I was thinking of just tapping off of the stock switched stereo turn on, which is on a 20amp fuse with the cigar lighters and the courtesy lights. The amp has is a 2 channel 100watt rms @ 4 ohms, and uses a 20amp fuse and another 20 amp fuse on the positive battery lead. The manual recommended a 16gauge wire for the remote lead... I'm thinking the remote powers a relay which switches to the battery 12v+ lead. I know you wouldn't have an exact answer, because it probably varies, but I was thinking that maybe someone who has done a lot with car amplifiers might chime in on what a similar powered amp might have as far as current on the remote turn on wire. Thanks, Mike
I can't speak for that specific model, but I would be surprised if you could measure it in milliamps... (I think they recommend 16 gauge as an all-around minimum, not just for the amount of current) -Bob Cunningham
any stereo I've used, if it didnt have both power ant and amp signal wire then the ant would be used as well, power should turn on as soon as the stereo power is on wether its cd or not.
Just splice it with the Ign wire going to the radio.. Not the constant 12volt, but the switched 12v. It doesn't draw enough current or amps to affect anything with the radio.. doubt it'll even affect the fuse. I've done this before.. with newer cars, but same principal... back in the 80's... I had 3 amps running off of the switched radio power on one car...lol. No problems.
The head unit only has power when using the AM/FM radio, I tested the lead out the back. Yes, I went ahead and spliced the remote on to the original stereo switched wire. Thanks for the help.
maybe you could list the wire/colors you see coming out of the harness?? should be: red....12v switched yellow....constant 12v black...ground orange ...illumination blue 9no stripe)...pwr ant. blue/ white stripe....turn on front speakers: white and white/black gray and gray/black Rear speakers: green and green/black purple and purple/black and maybe a cellphone interupt good luck
This model doesn't have a remote turn on for an amplifier. The manual that comes with the unit has a few different models and one of the higher end units has the remote turn on but mine doesn't.
that radio should have a trigger wire for amps. what does your owners manual say about adding an amp? what store did you but it from? was it an "open box" piece?
No longer needed. I am using the switched 12v coming from the original stereo wiring to act as a remote turn on feature. I forgot to mention The manual says "the remote turn on must be connected to the vehicle's head unit in order to reset the amplifier's protection circuits." How would the amplifier know if I am using the headunit or a different 12v switched? Do they just say this so people won't give the amp remote turn on a constant 12v+?
