Does anyone know where I can get an aluminum flywheel for a 455? New or used, just as long as I can replace the insert when the time comes. Thanks, Randy
I may be wrong since I haven't checked their catalog in awhile, but I think TA Performance sells aluminum flywheels.o No:
TA does have them $500. I thought a while back this was discussed and using a alum. flywheel in a heavy car along with the heavy rotating mass of the 455 wasn't a good idea. Of course I don't know what your application is but I thought I would throw that out there in case you wanted to read up on it.
For what's it's worth everyone I know who has tried an aluminum flywheel has taken it out. These were non Buick "A" bodies.
Thanks to you guys! My car is a '64 Skylark and I need it to leave very hard on a skinny tire. I have a Mcleod Softloc clutch and I have read all the posts I could find using "aluminum flywheel" as search. I may end-up wrong on this, but with the set-up I am trying to peice together I should be able to leave at 5000-5500 and when you do that, aluminum is just part of the package. I looked in my T/A book with no luck so I guess I should call them. Thanks again, Randy
Make sure your starting line gear ratio (first gear ratio times final drive ratio) is 10:1 or better.
Scott, You raise a good point! Here is what I have, 3.27 first gear in a Richmond 5-speed and my ring and pinion is 3.73 which comes to 12.19:1. If my motor had more legs and would rev to 6500 or so, I could use an even lower r/p. I would like to see about 15:1 total first gear, but that is for higher winding engines. Randy
