Aluminum Core Support Question?

Discussion in 'V-8 Buick Powered Regals' started by Tony, Dec 3, 2005.

I have an 81 Olds Cutlass with a Buick 455 in it. I would like to know if an aluminum core support out of a Regal would fit into it? They look the same, but would hate to buy one and not have it fit. Also, what year and which cars came with an aluminum core support. Was it just Regals or did other "G" bodied cars come with them?
    Thanks in advance,
    Tony

From my information, it was mostly Regals that came with them but also some Cutlasses did. All G-body coresupports are the same to the best of knowledge and they came on atleast 80 and 81 cars but might be found one year before and after those dates. I believe they also had aluminum deck lids on some Regals and Cutlasses of the same years. If you are digging through a yard for one, just bring the magnetic bolt tray and test the panels.

    Good Luck,

Yes they will fit your 81 cutlass. They came in 78 to 80 model g body cars wich share the same frame. I found aluminum cores on 78 and 79 cutlasses,Grand prix, malibu's and regals.Mostly regals depending on what you get it out of it may need some slight modification to the headlight area.
They're getting hard to find with the majority of the pick a parts only going with the newer faster moving model cars.
Plus they only came in about 5 percent of the cars of those years. And being that they're one of the only parts that I know thats inner changable with BOP and chevys there is great competition for them.
I pass by several large Pick a parts daily. So I stop on my way home about every other day to see whats out there. And over the course of several years been able to stock pile about six.
What you will be looking for is the letter A on the top of it. No need for a magnet they are very obvious!! With the lack of rust.
If you go to http://www.maliburacing.com/ there's some info a pics of the mods under the Tech section.

Here's a picture of the ones I've found.

With my new Regal, I was looking into this also. I've seen weight reduction "quotes" from 13-17 pounds off of the front end. Then put in manual steering box, plastic headlights instead of glass, and that's another 20 pounds or so. Then with a fiberglass front bumper and aluminum mounts, another 40 pounds or so. So it does all add up. It's just a matter of how much do you want to spend to go faster.
