    Jamie,
No problem, no rush. Like I said this was strickly for cosmetic reasons, I have the old one in, it works fine and its not like I can use the car now anyway. No bumbers interior etc. Brought it back to Mr alternator and explained to him I did't expect them to warrantee it because the problem is not with his work and they fixed it for free anyway (replaced regulator). Didn't expect that, threw the guy who did the work a 10 spot cause I'm like that. Hey is alternator work dirty work? I wouldn't think so but all the guys there were covered from head to toe in filth. Just curious. Thanks for all your help

Light comes on, gets brighter then when the car starts goes out. Bulb is a 194. I dont mean the normal mechanics dirt, these guys looked like they worked in a coal mine.

Actually, I converted my 12SI unit some two years ago, and it still works very well. The size of the case is a factor for heat, as the diodes in the 12 SI are larger, therefore better at dissipating heat. I think the concern here is over the 10SI, which does not have the air flow capacity the 12 does. The unit tests at 175 amps. I suggest checking the wiring carefully, and the current to the field. If it is excessive, the resistor may be necessary. Ray

    i didnt forget you matt!!!

the 10 & 12 si use "button" diodes, which are soldered in place.enough heat & the solder can melt, reset when cool & melt untill they fail.thats why i wont build a si over 94 amps.the cs rectifiers i use have the diodes pressed into the heat sink & welded to the stator strap.si units use only air to cool the rectifier, the cs uses air AND heat transfer thru the back housing.the cs units are far superior in disapating heat.matt i sent a pm

    Jamie,
I knew you wouldn't forget about me. Thats all great info, cant imagine it getting hot enough to melt solder but I definatly had heat issues. Timing was way off, carb too lean, it was like an oven in there. Got all that fixed and put about 20 miles on the original alternator and so far so good. As soon as it comes back from the trim shop I am going to try the SI one more time. If it stops working again I will be calling you.
    Thanks again
