AIR Pump Noise

    Looking for some advice on what to do with the AIR pump on the 72 stg1 I am restoring. The pump squeals like crazy. It is just mildly annoying at idle, but with some throttle it is crazy loud. I disassembled the pump during the resto process and have confirmed the internal vanes were removed at some point in the past. So it is no longer an air pump. It does still have the rest of the internals.

    Honestly the noise does not sound like a bad bearing. In fact the reason I took it apart was because when I rotated the pulley by hand you can hear the noise. Obviously as speed increases, like when spun by the engine, the noise becomes far louder.

    Interestingly in the service manual it says that it is not unexpected to hear a noise when spinning the pump by hand and this noise is not an indication of the pump being bad.

    Have others experienced this issue? What did you do? Replace the pump with a rebuild? Gut more of the internals?

    be real careful when taking it apart for new bearings, with the help of a more knowledgable friend we busted the housing. It was a miracle to find another.

    Took the pump off the car yesterday and disassembled it again. For those who haven't seen the inside, it's not just a simple straight shaft from the pulley to the other end of the pump. The pulley end shaft is only a couple inches long. It is an integral part of a metal drum about 4 inches in diameter that originally carried the vanes. The bearing on the opposite end of the pump (opposite the pulley end) is quite a bit larger (as shown in the pic below).

    I found my noise was coming from the end of the drum (opposite end from the pulley) rubbing on the end cover of the pump. The entire interior of the pump and drum have quite close tolerances, as you might expect since it is supposed to pump air. For some reason my drum was dragging/rubbing ever so slightly on the end cover. I decided to take a little off the end of the drum with a sander to provide some end clearance. A new bit of grease and back together. No more noise.
