AFB Problems

Well, I managed to take a good running 300 2 barrel engine and turn it into a balky, backfiring, hard starting car with just a carb and manifold change.

Sunday I switched from the 2 barrel to a correct cast iron 4 barrel intake manifold with a AFB from a 66 340 engine. I might add at this point that I completely rebuilt the carb with a kit from "CARS". This was my first ever AFB rebuild and I think there in lies some/most of my problems.

Put the carb on the manifold, with steel plate to keep things right. The car wouldn't start without pouring gas down the carb. Once I got it started and basically running, it wouldn't accelerate without backfiring through the carb or making belching sounds before reving up.

I have checked every vacum line, made sure the fuel pump was putting gas to the carb, checked all the hold down bolts on the carb and the intake. Please note that I did not mess with the distributor or timing as I didn't wnat to add that variable to this mess. The car was running fine before.

Right now I'm ready to pull my hair out with this thing and I still have to make new linkage for the transmission switch because it's about 1" too short to fit. The throttle rod fit fine.

Please don't suggest I go to a Edelbrock as I really want this thing to run with the AFB.

Any suggestions, other than I should have had somebody else rebuild the carb?

    Thanks

Do you get a nice shot of fuel when you twist open the throttle?
If not, there is a problem with the accelerator pump, or the check valve under the center squirter is stuck. You can remove the squirters from the top. Check valve is underneath. I had one stick after I cleaned the carb with purple power...that's not a great idea since it's caustic to aluminum, it must be rinsed very well.

Thanks, I'll try your suggestion tonight.
