My neighbor is working to get his POS late 70's inboard engine boat running. He won't give up -- hey, more power to him, I suppose -- but he has run into a roadblock with the carb.

"1979 Ford F250 7.5L (460?) with a square bore 675 cfm edelbrock 1406 carburetor. Carb needs a full rebuild -- it is just dumping fuel like mad into the engine."

Just needs an operational rebuild, but is it even worth trying? He says new carbs of the same model are about $550, but does not know if there's a cheaper alternative.

Any reason he can't do it himself? He is mechanically inclined and pretty competent with most any task, from what I have seen.

    Thoughts?

Well , a Edelbrock #1406 is a 600 CFM electric choke carb . I believe the marine carbs are a different number . Numbers are located front right of base near mount bolt hole .
If 1406 - grab a kit , carefully disassemble , flush it out good , blow out passages , reassemble .
Couple things - jet removal can be a pain so caution there , check rear of boosters - I've seen those round plugs come loose . I always epoxy those .
    Float level - 7/16"
    Float drop - 15/16"
Tip of float to gasket surface .

It just a carb - same principles/process applies. Get a kit and do it. Or send it to one of the boards re-builders.

Yeah, wasn't sure who on the board might want to mess with it if he decides he is afraid to do it himself...

First. there is NO high idle circuit on a marine motor.... That is what the throttle cable is for..

Two. a edelbroke is fit all carb.... It fit any thing for a 283 to 500... the needs to be jetted to Fit the motor it to be used on.

Three find a local gut than can rebuild and set up the carb for the motor you are working on..

To the best of my knowledge edelbrokes was Never put on a marine motor....... Get the right carb that was on the motor in the beginning..... My guess a Holley or a Q

Most important NEVER put a NON marine carb on a boat...

There's are Q-JETS notice the fuel over flow U shaped tube..... that for not allowing overflow fuel to fill the bilge with gas fumes......

A 1406 clean and re build is pretty easy for someone with mechanical aptitude.

A kit and a couple cans of carb cleaner should do the job inexpensively.

I'd tell him to give it a shot.

Yes, much appreciated. Neighbor now proceeding to look for new carb. (I think he doesn't like the condition of the existing one. Not my problem.) Whether he gets an appropriate one as per your guidance, who knows.
