I'm doing a buncha work to the ol motor, replace the whole top end pretty much, leaving the bottom end alone for now. I decided to pick up a new oil pump while I was at it, so for $25 I got a melling high volume pump kit. Since the pump is in the timing cover, you can't just buy a new oil pump, you have to get the kit that has new gears and such. The high volume kit has tallers gears, and a spacer plate so that they will fit. Well, anyway to the question-
It has springs for 40 PSI, 60 PSI, and 70 PSI... It also says that each spring also depends on the motor, if the bearings are beat the pressure will be lower and such... I just put the 60 PSI spring in. But what would the experts recomend? And also why not just go all the way to 70? would that cause any ill effects?

Motor has about 100K on it...

    Thanks,
    Nick

do some searching around, this is a very passionate issue with buick owners. some like the high pressure pumps, others swear that these pumps will blow your new motor out within 200 miles. most seem to agree that the booster plate and the std gears will provide enough.

i'm stepping back now and zipping the suit up

The regular oil pump with a booster plate is all that is really necessary here. You will want to check the condition of the timing cover too. The TC's for the small engines are inexpensive for new ones, it just might be worth it to spring for one . Jim Burek P.A.E. ENTERPRISES
