A Kill For Buicks Everywhere

A lot of Buick guys brag about winning races with the AC on. I think this beats that.

First off, a little bit of history. I drive a 1966 Buick Skylark to school. Everyone there trashes on it, and calls it a POS, and makes fun of it. To thier credit, it does have a right rear quarter made entirely of rust, and a tired Wildcat 375 that stalls a lot in the parking lot when it's cold. But I've always known it rocked.

But anyway, I was at one of my friend's house, and it's sort of becoming tradition to race home from this particular person's house. There's a nice, wide highway with high speed limits and a few lights to line up on, so it works great for it.

So I line up next to my friend, and rev her up a little bit. He drives some Mazdo from the 90's. No race car, but not a brick either. I give a gratutitous peel-out to start the race, and we haul for the main road. I turn onto it, and get pretty far out ahead, before slowing down a bit to watch for the fuzz. My friend, on the other hand, was still raring to go, and completely blew past me. I took it to the boards, let the engine roar, and started creeping back up on him, pushing ahead of him, at 70mph :Brow: , and beat him to a merge point, so he gets stuck behind me. We pull up to another light, and he tries to take me again, but I break the tires loose again and show him some smoky taillights, and he finally gives up and turns off to head for home.

By this point I'm feeling pretty awesome, but then I start to smell something. It smells like burning, and I don't like it. What could it be? I'd never really pushed the car that hard before, did I burn something out? Is the exhaust leeking? I stop and look under the hood, and I can still smell it strongly, but there's no sign of what's up. As I drive for home, I realise the car hesitates, and slows down a little, about once a second. Suddenly, I realise what's wrong. Remember how I rolled out of my friend's driveway? Remember how I thought it was too steep for just the transmission, so I put on the parking brake too? :Dou:

Killing imports with your parking brake still on. Thats what driving a Buick is all about! :3gears:

LMAO. Be nice, don't tell your friend, he'll feel bad. Hopefully you didn't damage your brakes, though.

I am a tad worried about the brakes, I'll probably go get them checked out at the end of the month, assuming I ever get paid again... I'm not too worried though, because the parking brake is so weak... you seriously cannot even tell it's on unless you're looking for it. I think it was only engaged enough to let them rub a little, not actually engage full-on. I'd get it looked at again... but after this, I really don't intend to ever set it again!

    That is a great story!!

But you don't need someone else to look at your brakes, you can do it yourself. Pull the wheel, then pull the drum and your'e lookin' at the shoes.
If you need to replace the shoes, then you can take the drums and have them cleaned up at the shop for just a bit of cash.. While your'e in there, check the wheel cyl. for any leaks and clean things up with Brakleen.
It't a pretty simple job, really. You should adjust the parking brake where it works like it should, that way you won't forget it, and if you need it , it does the job it should.

    Go for it!
