I've been combing the internet and ebay and all kinds of sites to try to figure out what shifter handle I have. I got it used recently from craigslist. The shifter base is a factory Hurst 4 speed unit with the 3138 stamp on the front of the body. It's interesting that the 3 shifter connections are at an equal elevation where the (3) bushings connect to the shifter arm linkages (most images I see have them at offset heights). Also, the shifter handle stick is the factory bayonet style, with a 0070 stamp on it that you can only see once the stick is removed from the base (I took it apart last night). The stick comes out of the base, is round cross section, and bends back only after an inch or so coming out of the base. Has a 3/8-16 thread (coarse). Sorry I will post pics tonight to show you, it's bugging me so I had to ask in the meantime! ---------- Post added at 09:29 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:28 AM ---------- I also meant to ask am I going to have to buy Pete Serio's book?? hehe
OK here are some pictures. It appears that the shifter stick maybe was heated by a torch and bent/straighted at some point in it's life? I'm guessing someone took some bend that was towards the driver out of the stick. The stick has "0070" stamped in it. Also pictured is the 3138 shifter base, and the 2223 bracket for bolting to the trans.
Hey ClanceyMan.... I cannot really know for sure by looking at our pix but..that Hurst lever appears to be a lot like a Poncho Trans Am Lever I have from a 73 Super Duty tranny. TO BE SURE...search on eBay for DME transmissions. Dennis has all the knowledge of ALL/ANY Hurst shifters, linkages, brackets etc. He should be able to help you identify what you've got. Thanks Jim, more great info! I heard back from Dennis, he says the 0070 stick that I have is for a 1978-1979 Pontiac Grand Am.
