99 Regal GS - Rear speaker access

Discussion in 'Sparky's corner' started by GS69350, Nov 14, 2007.

I know some of you out there have these newer Regals...

I just aquired a 99 Regal GS. It has the Monsoon 8 speaker stereo system.

Someone pulled hard on the wires going to the large (6x9?) speakers in the package tray area and basically ruined the speakers. (tabs were soldered and broke off, taking the braided wire that goes to the voicecoil with them, both sides!)

I attempted to get access to the speakers so I could replace them but could not find an obvious way to get to them. Getting from underneath does not look like an option. The covers on the top of the package tray also do not come off. It looks like I need to remove the whole package tray area - How do I do this???

    Any help would be appreciated!

Unless someone here has an answer, I suggest asking on www.regalgs.org . Tons of guys there have done sound system upgrades and can help you out.

Based on my quick scans through the regalgs site, removing the back seat to get to the package tray seems to be the way to go.

I got that far but it was 9:30pm and dark and I didn't feel like taking the seat out at the time... Good project for this weekend...

The Monsoon system uses 2ohm 6x9 speakers... Looks like I'll probably be doing a repair on the speakers instead of replacing as I'm sure the 2ohm will blow up the cheap 4ohm set I was going to put in.

Thank you both for your replies.

    Just in case anyone cares...

Pulled the rear seat out, pretty much just as easy as the old A-Bodies, only have to remove the large nuts on the floor seat belts. The bottom part of the seat is even easier.

Once the seat is out, have to pull 3 plastic clips from the package tray area that were hidden by the seat. Package tray comes right out. There is a tab that slides under part of the steel in the trunk, if you poke your head under there, you'll see it. Not an issue coming out, but remember to make sure it goes back the right way when reinstalling. The speaker assemblys have a squeeze tab you can get to in the trunk, then you just tilt up and out. Probably easier to do this than try and remove the speakers from the assembley while in the car, The rear screws are pretty close to the glass.

I know why the speaker wires were broken. Buick solders the wires to the speakers from the factory, not making for easy removal. The speakers are blown and don't make the most pleasant of sound. My guess is a previous owner got fed up and just yanked the wires until the tabs broke.

The Regalgs site has several articles about this system. Apparently the rear speakers are 2ohm and aftermarket 4ohm replacements just don't sound good or last long with the setup. New speakers are available through GM for roughly $50 per side. It also appears than pre-'04 had issues with these speakers blowing and the new '04+ replacements have an extra coating that alleviates this problem (or so a poster says, some asked for confirmation but I don't recall any backup to that claim).

Tools needed: 18mm socket, 10mm deep socket (or 10mm wrench), and weapon of choice for pulling out plastic push-in retainers. If you want to remove the speakers from the housing you need a very small torx bit.

Now, to find me a set of good speakers...
