Thought i would ask you guys to see your opinion on this:

I bought a 92 geo storm (for $100) to replace my 93 geo storm that was totalled (non-licensed, non resident mustang driver...:blast: :blast: )

It had a bent valve, so i replaced the head off my 93 onto the 92 (making sure to put the timing right, could have slipped a tooth though, which is equal to about 6 degrees)

Before i bought it it had been sitting for 7 years (still had 3/4 tank of gas  )

It runs alright (after some work) and passed smog (after some more work), and has a killer sound system from the other geo :TU:

But, when driving, easily felt during acceleration, the car will fall out of underneath itself, easily cured by giving it a little (alright alot) more gas or downshifting (automatic)

When watching the tach, it steadily climbs like normal, then falls down a few hundred rpm before picking up again. If i leave my foot on the accelerator the same it will come back after it does it.

    It does this repeatedly.

    Recent work:

New gas (, a few thousand miles worth)
Tune up (was on the head from the other geo)
Head gasket, exhaust gasket, intake manifold gasket.
    New spark plugs
$180 at a shop that was supposed to fix the timing (failed smog because timing was off spec)
New fuel filter, fuel lines, air filter

Since i went to a swap meet and saw some magical spark thing/demonstration, i bought one of those little doohickeys and put it on. It idles smoother now (still a little rough, maybe a miss) and it doesnt stall nearly as bad, but its still there.

I was thinking of replacing the coil and see if that helps.

    Any opinions?

    Thanks in Advance :TU:

    anyone?

Also had the EGR valve cleaned and fixed.

Before spending any more money :dollar: I'd have it scanned.

Doesn't "the zone" do that for free??

    Scanned for engine codes?

Check engine light hasnt come on for a bit, but it did come on every now and then while driving (so did the 93, so it could be a problem in the head?)

I guess i could go to AutoZone and have them check it out, think they would let me take the scanner for a ride? :Brow:

Maybe there is dry-rot in the rubber band...
    Sorry, I couldn't resist.

It does sound like an odd problem. I'd suspect the computer.

    ouch.

any idea where it is located?

something like it is located under the stereo, not sure what it is.

looks like ill have it code-read.

I replaced and re-wound the rubber band, no change :spank:

The computer would be automatic/manual specific wouldnt it, meaning i cant use the one from my manual in it?

And when i fixed it it wouldnt start, ended up that almost half the fuses were blown (including the "main" fuse, 80A or 50A, cant remember)

Maybe whatever screwed those over took its toll on the rest of the electronics?

That and the previous owner dropping it off a trailer going down the street :Dou:

    Thanks :TU:

well today it did its worst.

Pulling out of walmart (yeah yeah yeah...) and it was up around 2500 in first gear dropped all the way down to 1100 or so, would NOT go back up, full throttle didnt fix anything, then it backfired (quick short pop) not sure if it was in the instake tube or the exhaust, i would guess the intake as the sound came from up front.

I need to go to autozone, but would that code reader read this type of problem?

Scanner might pick up something, never know.

You might want to check the fuel pressure too.

Yep, I oun a Geo metro, Dont laugh at me, 3 Cilinder. Its great on gas. I was wanting to point out that you should get the fuel pressure speck and see if it is in range. From expirence at idle it could be within speck . But if you can drive the car with the tester connected you can note the pressure when the problem starts. You can attach the guage tester under the wiper blade so that you can see it while driving. Thats a long time for a car to sit with old gas and the fuel pump in the tank. Also note that it may be hard to find someone with a high pressure guage for loan. I had to buy a master kit to be able to work on vech. with high pressure electric pumps. Also replace the fuel pump even if the pressure is only under spec.. several PSI. That is enough to cause a problem.

how much work is it to replace, from what i saw looking under the car, alot of stuff has to come out to get to the tank.

My friend had a metro (really a ralley metro :Brow: ) that car was awesome, 40 mpg and he could go through our river farther than any lifted trucks could :TU:

Ill try and find one of those gauges, see if autozone rents them out, if not i may just buy the actual gauge and plumb it in myself.

I dont know how long it actually sat, it was las registered in 2000, but between there and 07 when i bought it ($100 :Brow: ) someone else tried to buy it (and coincidently dropped it accidentily off their trailer...) When i got it it had a little less than 1/2 a tank, but it ran fine when i did get it running.

    Thanks for the recommendations guys.

Thought i would add, one of the hoses for the gas tank (brings gas up to the filler neck from the tank, not sure what its for, 5/8" tubing) was cracked, and whenever we would fill it up it would leak gas until the level got under 3/4 a tank.

Replaced it, but maybe this could be a symptom of something else?

Is this car burning oil by any chance? If so, the catalytic converter may be plugged. I used to laugh at people who say such things -- until it happened to me. Engine just didn't like to rev. Kept getting worse until all I could do was idle around town. Then one day it wouldn't even idle. All that time I could feel strong pulses coming out the tail pipe; but apparently enough exhaust was being retained in the cylinder to really screw up combustion.

Its a good suggestion, i was planning on swapping out the exhaust soon anyway (muffler is nearly rotted through from sitting on grass)

although this car has no problem revving (once it stops bogging...)

It really dies of in the top end though, best shifing is around 6000, but i tried 6600 for fun, took awhile to get there from 6k.

Ill let you know how it goes oncei get a fuel pressure gauge and the exhaust.

still nothing on this, never got the gauge, havent done the exhaust yet, but im working towards it.

Took it to autozone, they say 92 is too old for their code sensor (94+)

Thought i would throw out another idea see if it makes sense to anyone?

earlier i gassed it from a stop and it was knocking a bit, the check engine light came (and stayed) on, then the car started going like normal, so i was thinking you guys are right on the problem being with fuel delivery.

But this problem was also on my other geo storm (totalled), just not as bad.

My brother thought i should look into the TPS (throttle position sensor) as a possible problem.

I was thinking maybe the injectors are bad? I just remembered we swapped heads from the totalled 93 (and the injectors stayed in) so maybe its a problem with the injectors that was added to by a bad something else.

Ill check with him and see how to check the TPS as well as take the injectors out. I have the originals from the 92 that i may try.

And, when we swapped the head the vacuum wiring was slightly different, we did our best to make everything go where it was supposed to, but one vacuum hose (along the fuel rail) that just looks like its an extension, vacuum goes in one side and out the other, was not hooked up. I plugges both ends but was maybe thinking it had some control over how much the injectors shot?

    Thanks :)

Bad gas from sitting for seven years, ruining the new injectors from the previous geo.

I thought about getting a Subaru Justy AWD CVT, Its like subaru's metro. $400 but its been sitting for 6 years. Not bad, but not sure If I want to take a chance and buy it for a winter beater. Who knows what could be wrong without putting money into to get it running and driving. Sorry to hijack:eek:
