This option was called 'Convenience Center console' and was introduced on the (then) new for '71 full-sized Buicks (LeSabre, Centurion, Electra 225, Estate Wagon & Riviera). I think '74 or '75 was the last year. These were color-matched to the interiors.

I have one in my 72 skylark convertible, according to my book it shows as an option for all cars in 72

Wow!!! I got one of those consoles out of the junkyard many years ago. It came out of a 1971 Buick LeSabre. It was apparently a fire chiefs car. (The car had all kinds of weird electric stuff. Like a 110 volt outlet wired into the alternator and other crazy stuff.) I always wondered what it was called, and or used for.
